Robert Hoops Obituary
He was born on Feb. 1, 1926, in New London, the son of Samuel and Barbara (Ratutz) Hoops. After graduating from Bulkeley School in 1944, Bob was drafted into the Army Air Corps and served in World War II. Bob and Barbara (Magowan) Hoops were married on May 27, 1950 and they spent almost 66 years together.
Bob worked for Ironworkers Local 15 Union for 38 years until his retirement. Bob was the epitome of hard work. He rebuilt the family home in the Eastern Point section of Groton over a period of 45 years. No job was too big for him to take on. He was a craftsman and enjoyed helping others. As an avid boater, Bob and his family spent most summer weekends on the water. Napatree Point and Ram Island were his favorite spots to anchor and spend the night.
Bob was easy-going and had a great sense of humor; he was famous for his one-liners and humorous quips. He attended most of his children's and grandchildren's activities and sporting events. He loved grilled kielbasa, Barbara's meatloaf and a glass or two of red wine. He was fun to be around.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his two daughters, Christine Clemenzi (John) of Rowley, Mass. and Janice Snape (Barry) of Colchester; his two sons, Robert Hoops Jr. (Linda) of East Hampton and Peter Hoops (Ani) of Stonington; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. Interment in Elm Grove Cemetery will follow with military honors. Calling hours will be held from noon until the start of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's name may be made to Center for Hospice Care, 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360 or to the Visiting Nurses Association of Southeastern CT, 403 North Frontage Road, Waterford, CT 06385.

I worked with Bob when I was an apprentice Ironworker. The word "work" wasn't part of the vocabulary. Each job was an adventure that was fun. There were no arguments, just laughter. If you made a mistake, and I made my share, it was turned into a moment of laughter and a learning experience. I enjoyed everyday that I spent with Bob. He was a gentlemen, never a foul word, and he respected the people he worked with. He was a unique person, one of a kind, and a person one would be proud to emulate. He will be missed.
