William Rando Obituary

Old Lyme - William "Billy" Francis Rando, 68, of Old Lyme passed away at home Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021, defying a daunting cancer prognosis for nearly a decade.

Billy is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Berry Rando and their four children: Kacie, Jesse, Carly and her husband James Wood and Caroline and her boyfriend JJ; in addition to sister Connie and husband William Mitchell; and brother Tom and wife Pat Rando. He leaves behind the three cherished grandchildren that he and Nancy raised: Trinity, Kiernan and Lyric; as well as granddaughter, Tristyn of East Lyme; and a grandson due to arrive in June. He also treasured his many nieces, nephews, cousins, godsons and friends. He was born to the late Ruth and Charles Rando June 6, 1952.

He enjoyed an idyllic childhood in Niantic, reminiscing fondly about the family's large yard that became the epicenter for neighborhood sports and games. Many of his friendships formed as a grade school student have not only persevered, but flourished over the decades. After graduating from East Lyme High School in 1970, and attending college for two years, Billy began his career as a builder. The homes and projects he completed were a testament to his physical strength, work-ethic and intellect.

Billy met his future wife, Nancy, at a party when his t-shirt sparked a conversation about the Yankees. They would have celebrated their 39th anniversary in May. They built their first home in Lyme where they resided for 15 years. It was there where they became parents to four children, eventually moving to the home Billy built by the shore in Old Lyme. He experienced immense pleasure having a marina and boat within walking distance, allowing him to share his passion for boating and fishing with his family.

He was an avid music lover from a young age, having the good fortune to witness some of the greatest bands of all time in concert, including the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, Ray Charles and BB King among others. Billy taught himself to play the guitar in his 50s, acquiring a large collection of guitars.

Billy will be remembered by his dependability, quick wit and distinctive personality. His keen interest in politics reflected his distinct vision of right and wrong, never apprehensive in expressing his spirited indignation at society's injustices. He impressed these values on those around him. His selflessness and love was transparent in the relationship he shared with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him their "Bia" or "Dada." He credits them with strengthening his will to live and filling his days with a sense of purpose and joy.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when it is safe to gather. The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic is assisting the family with the arrangements, www.neilanfuneralhome.com.

I only knew Bill by sight high school but we connected after a semi-reunion in Niantic years some years ago. We got to spend a few days together, one at a time, as I returned to Niantic. We started a weekly Tuesday morning phone call a few years ago and they were never boring. We became really good friends and I’m glad of it.

Nancy and family - Bill and I are so sorry to hear about Billy's passing. He sure fought a long, hard battle. Please accept our deepest sympathy for your loss. One thing I learned about him from his obituary was his love for music. I can't believe he went to so many great artist's concerts! That is impressive!
