Anne Hussey Obituary

Anne Mahar Hussey
Anne Mahar Hussey (92)
Anne Mahar Hussey died peacefully on September 25th with family at her side. She was born in NYC, grew up in White Plains, NY and was the wife of Alexander B. Hussey, who died in 2003. Anne and Al Hussey were owners of the Roger Sherman Inn of New Canaan for twenty three years. Al was president of Norwalk's Board of Realtors and a Captain in World War II, fighting five battles from Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge. Anne's grandfather, Michael Meagher M.P., served twelve years, representing North Kilkenny, Ireland in the British House of Commons.
Anne worked for the New York Times, RCA and directly for Alfred A. Knopf. She attended Fordham University and the Columbia School of General Studies. She was one of the original founders of FISH in Norwalk, was on the Board of the Norwalk Symphony, a volunteer for Mid-Fairfield Hospice for 16 years, and a volunteer at the women's prison in Danbury, CT.
She leaves three children, Alexander Hussey (Danbury, CT), David Hussey (San Jose, Costa Rica), Patricia Hussey (Old Greenwich, CT) and one grandson, Sean Hussey (Norwalk, CT), along with many beloved and dear friends.
A small private service will be held in Anne's honor. Donations can be made to any organization that brings beauty into the world. Sitting in her bay window watching the Silvermine River, Anne would have enjoyed this beautiful Fall day. Let's do it for her. I first met Anne in the late 1980s, when I was Executive Director of Mid-Fairfield Hospice (MFH) in Norwalk, Connecticut. She was one of an extraordinary group of hospice volunteers. Her compassion and dedication to our patients and families were exceptional. We had both previously worked in publishing, and this quickly led to a friendship that lasted as long as she lived.

Even though I moved on from MFH in 1991 to a larger hospice in Maryland, our MFH team became and remains a loving family that has stayed in close touch all these years. Two wonderful marriages happened among the team. I married our social worker Nancy McGovern, and our nurse Sue Pellowe married our chaplain Gordon Major. Anne was there for it all, sharing in our love and happiness, and she was there again when we lost Gordon in 2014 and Nancy in 2016.

As recently as last summer, Anne invited me to spend a weekend in her lovely home where she fed me amazing meals and shared magical stories from her fascinating life. One evening that weekend our hospice team gathered for an exquisite dinner full of good memories and laughter.

Anne had so many fine qualities and was loved by every member of our team. In addition to her kindness and generosity, she was brilliant, thoughtful, curious, fun, wise, and worldly. I consider her a great humanitarian. She also had a delightful sense of humor.

Annes death is a big loss for all of us, but she lived a long, full, rewarding, and important life. She has earned the right to Rest In Peace. The world is better because of her, and she will long be remembered for her great heart. She sent me many emails over the years and always signed them, Love and blessings. And so I will end this by saying, Love and blessings to you, my dear Anne.
