Carmine Russo Obituary

DR. CARMINE PAUL RUSSO
ITHACA - Dr. Carmine Paul Russo, 94, of Ithaca, died peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2009, at Bridges Cornell Heights. He was born in New York City in 1914, the son of Ciro and Maria Grazia Russo. He was a 1938 graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University and did residency training in Urology at Queens General Hospital and the Long Island College Hospital. During World War Dr. Russo was a Major in the United States Army and served 4 years as third-in-command of a three-thousand bed military hospital in Coventry, England for which he received the Bronze Star.
On his return to the United States Dr. Russo established the first urologic practice in Ithaca, New York, in 1947. At that time, most major urology operations were done by general surgeons. Dr. Russo brought innovative surgical and clinical techniques and procedures to upstate New York, and was a modernizing force behind the development of Tompkins County Hospital, the current Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca. He retired from clinical practice in 2004, a difficult year in which he lost his wife, our mother, Rose Russo, to cancer after 62 years of marriage.
Keeping current with his specialty was extremely important to our father, and he was an avid and committed reader of the literature in his and other medical specialties. He was knowledgeable and thoughtful about the contemporary problems in urology and urologic oncology. Important as well was his commitment to art, literature and the humanities. Dr. Russo was a master of the mid-court, two-handed basketball shot, a joy to many of his teammates.
His career spanned most of the twentieth century, from the discovery of antibiotics to the cloning of the human genome. He served on the staff of the Cayuga Medical for over a half-century. His gentle healing and his generous spirit touched several generations of Ithacans. His medical expertise and his academic excellence never overshadowed his humility. C. Paul Russo was a loving and dedicated parent to his children, and a devoted spouse to our mother. For this, especially, we will always be grateful.
Predeceased by his wife Rose, Dr. Russo is survived by his children, Linda Russo and Carlos Castellanos, Nancy Wilson and Bruce Wilson, Dr. Paul Russo and Dr. Mary Sue Brady. His surviving grandchildren are Philip J. Blair, III and wife, Dr. Jennifer Bodnick, and Grace, Mary Rose and Paul Russo. He also has a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Rose Blair. Dr. Russo is also survived by his brother, Dr. Vincent Russo; and sister, Rose Taft and their families, as well as his sister-in-law, Mrs. Adelaide Rachun of Ithaca and her family; and brothers-in-law, Dr. John Russo, Dr. Francis Russo and their families.
Friends and family may call from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Bangs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bridges Nursing Scholarship Fund, care of Elizabeth Classen Ambrose, Bridges at Cornell Heights, 407 Wyckoff Ave., Ithaca, NY 14850.

Dr. Russo performed surgery on me when I was only 6 years old back in 1964. I still remember his kind and gentle voice, and credit him with saving my life. I was moved to tears when I read of his passing for he was truly one of the great ones and will be missed.

When your father would talk about his family I would find myself drifting away from the conversation and finding myself looking at his facial expression of love and warmth he felt for all of you. Farewell Doctor/Friend I'll always carry that picture in my heart and mind for a long time. Ciao.

Dear Russo Family,
My aunt Vinnie(DeCesare)Ciccolini had been friends with your parents since they were children in NY.
When I moved to Ithaca in 1974, she came not only to see me, but to visit with them as well. It was always a pleasure to spend time with them.
My husband had played a few games of basketball with Dr.Russo while he was attending Cornell in the 60's. The stories still make him smile.
We think of your family at this very sad time, and wish you all the best. He was very special, as was Rose.

From my earliest memories of "Doc" when I was a young basketball player at Teagle Hall, to looking up to his son Paul at IHS, to getting to know Nancy and Bruce, it seems like everything this wonderful man touched was special.

I was his patient for several years, and was always grateful for the time he spend explaining things to me and reassuring me. His strong and compassionate nature always shone through. An old-fashioned healer of the best kind, though always up to date with the latest information, he kept going strong for more years than most people could. I will miss chatting with him at the Y, too. A life well lived.

The first words that come to mind when I think of Dr. Russo are gentle, kind and compassionate. Whether he was treating my 10 yr old son, myself or my husband, he would take the time to explain things in terms we could all understand and make sure that we were comfortable and at ease. Dr. Russo was a true gentleman and an extremely knowledgeable doctor. Ithaca was truly fortunate to have had him as one of their physicians. He can never be replaced.

He was known to me as Uncle Carmine. I remember his warm smile the best. We were not close in miles, so I saw him very little. However, his smile I did see often, on his son's Paul's love for his father every time Uncle Carmine's name was mentioned. My deepest sympathy to his family.

When I think back to my encounters with Dr. Russo at the hospital, I think of warm and compassionate. He seemed to be the kind of man that loved people and treated all of us with respect. His soft spokeness and genuinely caring ways were always present and I never minded going the extra step for him. He is one of the warm memories I have of people I used to work with. My deepest sympathy to you, his family. I know he will be greatly missed.

As a child, I was a frequent patient of your father in the 70's. I loved the "mansion" as it looked to me on Geneva St. And the gorgeous paintings! When I got over my fears of being there for the first time (within minutes) I looked closer at the signature and realized HE painted them! One of my favorite ones was the view of Senaca St and the Temple Theater. Tompkins County bank now stands near that spot. Your father was a kind and gentle man. I'll never forget the gentleness and kindness he showed me when I was sick.
