PROFESSOR WILLIAM FREDERICK FREUND
(1916-2014)
Prof. William Frederick Freund, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014.
He was born on Jan. 20, 1916, in Madison, Wis. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy A. Freund, who passed away earlier this year after 73 years of marriage.
William graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He earned two fellowships from Louis Comfort Tiffany foundation. He retired as a professor emeritus of fine arts from the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Ill. in 1981. From 1946–1964 William was a professor of Fine Art and Design at Stephens College, Columbia Mo.
A few of his achievements include being featured in Life Magazine as one of America's Top 10 Painters of the 1950's "Rising Young Artist in America"; He was listed in Who's Who in America. He was a featured artist in the Missouri Pavilion at the 1964 New York Worlds Fair. His paintings remain in permanent collections in museums throughout the world.
He was the devoted father of four children, Freya (Charles) Pease of Columbia, Mo., Marlene Freund of Eden Prairie, Minn., Frederick Freund of Watersmeet, Mich., Patricia (Douglas) Summers of Eden Prairie, Minn. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
One of his proudest accomplishments was the lake home he built in 1948. The family used it as a summer vacation home until William and Dorothy retired there in 1981. They enjoyed their retirement there for 33 years.
Those who shared his deep love of the arts and the beauty of the wilderness in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan will miss William.

To the Will Freund family, So sorry for your loss. Will was my colleague at S.I.U.E. from 1971-74. He is remembered by me as a quiet giant of an artist. Heaven is richer with Will up there with his lovely wife Dorothy.
