David Axler Obituary

David A. Axler, 71, of Gouldsboro, died on Monday. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Geri Kassoway Axler.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the beloved son of the late Nathan and Elsie Axler. He was a graduate of Delhaas High School, class of 1959. He went on to achieve a BS from Pennsylvania State University (1963); an MS (1966) and Ph.D. in Microbiology (1969) from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in Philadelphia. David completed his post-doctoral work in virology at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology in Philadelphia. He was a professor of microbiology and immunology at Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine from 1975 to 1998. He also held the position of acting dean, vice president of academic affairs, vice president for research and dean for educational affairs, and vice president for student affairs during that period. From 2001 to present, David was a professor emeritus at Temple University School of Medicine after holding the position of associate dean for student affairs, professor and course director for microbiology and immunology at Temple School of Podiatry, Medicine and Dentistry. After happily retiring to Gouldsboro, David took the position of associate dean for student affairs and professor of microbiology and immunology at Commonwealth Medical College.

Loved by colleagues and students, David had an accomplished career. He had a great love for his college, was so very proud of his students and had tremendous respect for his colleagues. He was extremely touched and honored to be asked to hood the first graduating class this May. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a true role model who always put himself before others. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

My condolences to Dr Axler's family. He was a kind, thoughtful and generous man whose contributions to TCMC were numerous and it was a priviledge to have worked with him during the early days of TCMC.

Family is not always blood. It's those people who come into your life & touch a special place in your heart. When my mom met a woman with a daughter about the same age as me over 37+ years ago, I had no idea my life would be changed forever. I always said I wanted a sister & just realized I was given one that day. Along with an awesome Aunt & Uncle. I don't have a big family & didn't know most of my aunts & uncles until I got older, so I loved the extended family I got to know so well. So it's with a heavy heart that I have to say that I lost my Uncle David today. He was an amazing man & I'm so blessed to have had him in my life. I wished I would've been able to spend more time with him, but I always appreciated the time I did have. Laur, you are the BEST sister I could've ever asked for & I want you to know how much your dad meant to me. He will be truly missed. I am here for you always & your family will be in my thoughts & prayers. We will get through the next few days together as well as every day after. I love you bestie!! Be at peace Uncle David & know your memories will live on forever. ?

Son. Husband. Father. Grandfather. Friend. Mentor. Colleague. Scientist. Educator. Administrator. Associate Dean for Student Affairs and the list goes on and on. David was both a good friend and mentor to me. He spoke of his family often and how important family was to him. Kind. Honest. Caring. Humorous. Fair. These are all adjectives that describe David and his interactions with others. I learned so much from him and respected how much family came before everything else. We used to joke about how we would be remembered. I pray I am as respected and loved as David Axler when creator comes to call. My sincere condolences to his wife Geri and family. My life is better for knowing David and his legacy lives on in Lauren, Gabe and Leah. Pop-pop loved you all very much and he will be missed immensely by many.

My condolences to the family and friends. Dr. Axler was a mentor and a friend to me when I was a student at PCPM. My life is better having known him, even for those short four years.
Wishing you peace during this difficult time.

Some people you never forget. We go all the way back to "D" Street. Even though we didn't share that address for very long, Nate, Elsie, David and Lynn were always remembered with great fondness.
I was sad to read of David's passing, impressed by all he accomplished and happy to see that his smile hadn't changed after all these years.
My condolences, Lynn, to you and your family.

Dear cousin,
I just wanted to send you my condolences and know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. When I found out I couldn't stop crying but so many memories came flooding back. Wonderful memories... All the thanksgivings and Passovers we spent together growing up how you my brother and I would play in the " secret tunnel" between the laundry room and basement lol Duffy the cat, but what stands out the most for me was what a truly amazing man your father "uncle David " was to me. I will always remember the wonderful encouraging conversations we had. I always looked up to him and he was so kind to me. I could talk to him about everything and anything and he would listen and always had inspiring uplifting advice for me. I will never forget my Bat Mitzvah and the time he took to pull me aside to express how proud of me he was and the conversation still to this day resonates so clearly in my head as if it was just yesterday. The same way when he came all the way up to Penn State to visit with me. I will always treasure that selfless and kind act. We spent the whole day together laughing talking reminiscing about his time there as a student as well. He made me feel special and loved. I truly feel blessed that I had the honor to have him in my life and be able to say that's my uncle with pride in my heart and the biggest smile on my face. He will be missed but never forgotten. He lives on through you and his grandchildren, and all the family friends colleagues and students who's live's he touched and impacted so positively. I will do my best to make it but I wanted to let you know I will be donating to the scholarship fund as well as having a tree planted in his name in Israel. I love you hugs and kisses your cousin
Always,
Raina

My friendship with David goes back to the late 70's when he was the dean at PCPM, albeit job related. I never missed an opportunity to visit with him on my yearly visits to Philadelphia over a 32-year span. He always would host me at the Cherry Street Chinese Restaurant which he loved so much. David's outstanding contributions to the health-care field will serve as a model for worthy younger colleagues to follow. He was the consummate adviser/teacher/administrator. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

Geri & Family,
It was with great sadness that I learned of David's passing. He was a true mentor and inspiration to me. It was such a privilidge to work with him and know him. I truly respected and admired David. He was so kind and loved by so many. I remember many of the things that he said to me and I looked up to him. He was not only a supervisor, but a friend in so many ways. He was a wonderful man that touched so many lives. I feel blessed to have had the good fortune to have known him. I hope that you and your family find peace in the days to come. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers.

John & Lauren - Please accept my sympathy on the death of your Dad and Father-in-Law. I never had the honors of meeting David, but I know he was special and he will be missed terribly. I realize that words are so inadequate at a time like this, but I hope it will be of some comfort to the Casiello/Axler family that all of you are and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.
