Martha Likins Obituary

MARTHA LIKINS Martha Likins died on Sunday, July 17. She was 86 years old. Martha Jane Copeland Likins was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 22, 1929 to Arch and Edna Copeland. She was the youngest of five siblings, all of whom, as well as her parents, predecease her. Martha attended the local schools in Mt. Lebanon, PA until she was in her teen years when she attended The Grier School, a college preparatory boarding school for girls located in central Pennsylvania. It was there that Martha made life-long friends, learned to love learning and to ride horses, as Grier has a special program for English equestrians. From Grier, Martha attended Bucknell University, ultimately graduating from Vanderbilt University with a degree in nursing. Martha then went on to earn her Master's degree in Nursing Education from the University of Pittsburgh. Martha's young adult life was spent nursing and traveling. Her nursing career took her to various places, including New York City, Casper, Wyoming, Portland, Oregon, and finally Arcata, where she lived for more than 50 years, most of them in her beloved house on Chester Avenue. Martha loved Arcata and Humboldt County, embracing the town and the community and all its uniqueness. Before settling in Arcata, Martha traveled. She did a "tour" with her mother, visiting places in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. She spent a year with her girlfriends traveling through Europe, and then returned again as the chaperone for a few of her nieces and nephews. Her love to travel didn't stop when she became a mother. She took her daughters on many trips, including to Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, and one summer, camping across the United States. Martha was a long-time School Nurse at the Humboldt County Office of Education. She discovered school nursing after her divorce - a perfect nursing job for a working woman with young children, as she never worked weekends, school holidays, or summers. She served schools throughout Humboldt County, especially loving Glen Paul and the schools in Hoopa. She retired after over 20 years of service, only to get involved with Hospice, the same group who nursed her to a peaceful and dignified death. Martha's life was one of commitment to service and faith. She was a lifelong advocate of women, women's health, and women's education, and a lifelong Presbyterian, having been baptized into the church as infant and serving as a deacon and elder. Her final years were spent in care with Redwood R&R, a lovely and loving facility. She was content with her life and dreamed happy dreams. Martha is survived by her daughters, Mary and Virginia, and their adult sons, JD, Dominik, and Adam. She lived a full life, was well-loved, and will be well remembered. May her memories be a blessing. Per her wishes, Martha was cremated. A service will be held at Arcata Presbyterian Church on September 3rd. Memorial gifts may be made in her memory to Arcata Presbyterian Church, 670 11th St. Arcata, CA, 95521; Vanderbilt School of Nursing, 2301 Vanderbilt Place, Nashville, TN 37240-7727; or Eureka Planned Parenthood, 3225 Timber Fall Court, Ste. Dear Gin, I was So Touched by the beautiful tribute you paid to your mother at the Memorial Service on Sat. Your words captured the strong relationship that you shared. I am so grateful for your courage and composure that day and also for your many trips to Eureka to visit her over the years. With many fond memories. Love, Pat Thornburgh

The scene: A September 1972 Jacoby Creek school board meeting.
A request was made for board approval of the school's involvement in the county school's environmental education program and specifically my third grade class going to the Wolf Creek outdoor school. The request was denied. Martha was in the audience. She responded, "I am appalled that this board would reject... "The board reconsidered and then approved. So we went and for many years J.C. kids went to Wolf
Creek and Whiskeytown outdoor school and on many field trips. Outdoor ed became a vital part of the school experience Frank Ferguson

I worked for Martha at the Humboldt County Office of Education. She was a wonderful role model. Intelligent, passionate, hard working and funny. Later when I worked for Public Health she volunteered on various committees including becoming a founding member of the Humboldt County AIDS Task Force. Our community is better place because of her dedication.

I remember Martha and it doesn't seem so long ago, but time flies. Mad River Hospital, where I have worked for over 40 yrs., has allowed me to meet / work with so many delightful people. I remember meeting Martha and enjoyed chatting with her when we met, usually in the café there. Always a smile, always a cheerful attitude for all. Her gaze was direct and heartwarming. I haven't seen her for a long time but will always remember her cheerful countenance.

I didn't realize Martha had passed until entering the obit column to find another friend. My memories of Martha go first to a long time ago (mid 70's when I first met her while doing an internship in school nursing within the HSU nursing program, as I returned to get my BSN. She was an exemplary school nurse! What I remember most is how tenacious she was in advocating for the children within the school districts, making sure they received the needed services. She was also willing to guest lecture in pertinent classes where she would share about the important role of the school nurse. And lastly, I enjoyed seeing her over her retired years, enjoying Center Arts and being acknowledged by those who loved her in the community.... I will miss her, but I will never forget her legacy!

I worked with Martha when she was the school system. I loved her spirit and how she fought for "her" kids.

Martha lived a long and useful life. She was, in addition to all the things said about her in the obituary, a member of the group which started the Planned Parenthood in Humboldt county in 1976. In additio she served two terms on the Northern Humboldt School Board at a critical time. A straight shooter, said her mind when needed., She also helped to bring a nurse midwife who delivered al the babies in Camoapa, Nicaragua to Humboldt County to visit all the clinics and hospitals. She wa very loved and admired for her good works.

Your mom was such an amazing person and lady. I always enjoyed talking with her and hearing about all her adventures. She took care of you both and loved all who were lucky to enter her orbit. My heart breaks for all of you on the loss of your mom and grandmother. Such a special lady.

Hugs and prayers for all of you.

In December 1972, when I was a teenager, I did clerical work as a temp at the Humboldt County Office of Education. Martha was one of the first people that I met. She was so professional, considerate, intelligent and LOTS OF FUN! Our paths never crossed again, unfortunately. I only knew her a few short weeks, AND I'VE NEVER FORGOTTEN HER! May she rest in peace.
