Wally Aseltine

NORTHFIELD – Wally Aseltine, 74, died Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at his home on the family farm, a few steps from where he entered the world on Oct. 9, 1935. He was the son of Harry and Avis (Blanchard) Aseltine.

He was a graduate of Northfield High School, class of 1953, and had served in the Vermont Army National Guard. Wally had worked locally as an automobile mechanic for many years before owning and operating the Texaco Service Center in Northfield Center, subsequently moving to the former Nantana Mill in Northfield.

His passion was working the farm on Aseltine Road in Northfield, which was purchased by his parents in 1921. He was a member of the Dewitt Clinton Masonic Lodge in Northfield and the Elks Club in Montpelier. He was very active in Northfield, serving the community for over 40 years in such capacities as lister, member of the select board, zoning board, and currently board of adjustment.

He had been married to Barbara McFarland. He married Carol (Hight) Bailey in Biddeford, Maine, on Feb. 25, 1977. Survivors include his wife Carol Aseltine of Northfield; four children, Dwight Aseltine of Burlington, David Aseltine and his wife Jeanne (Melville) of Middlesex, Jocelyn Lawson and her husband Kedric of Colchester, Jessica Aseltine of Northfield; two stepsons, Karl Bailey of Northfield, Shawn Bailey of Marshfield; two sisters, Anna Grenier of Waterbury Center, Ellen Jerry of Williamstown; four grandchildren, Isaac Aseltine, Angie Aseltine, Brittany Bailey, Shawn Venner; and several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Northfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Central Vermont Humane Society, PO Box 687, Montpelier, VT 05601-0687 or to the Vermont Heart Association, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495.
