Bernadine Humphreys Obituary

DALLAS — Bernadine Dorothy Humphreys (known as "Bernie"), born on March 28, 1929, in Nanticoke, passed away peacefully on Jan. 20, 2021, in her home at Meadows Manor, Dallas.

She was the daughter of Lewis Skok and Sophie Mocien Skok. Bernie had one younger brother, Richard. She was born during the Depression Era and lived on a farm with her family in Lehman. Although she grew up during turbulent economic times, she said she never felt poor. Her upbringing gave her respect for the little joys in life and made her innovative in finding ways to use everything and waste nothing. This was very important to her.

Bernie graduated in 1946 from Lehman High School and then finished an accounting program at Wyoming Seminary in Kingston. She married the love of her life, Edward Seely Humphreys, on June 9, 1951, and later raised six children together in Kingston. In 1958, they opened Humphreys Bootery in the Back Mountain Shopping Center.

After raising their children, Bernie and Ed enjoyed camping and traveling in their motorhome. They made many friends throughout their travels and could usually be found in Florida during the winter. In the summer, they would return to Pennsylvania where they enjoyed spending time with friends at the Harveys Lake Yacht Club. They eventually found a piece of paradise at Crystal Lakes in Naples, Fla., where you could see Bernie riding her bicycle to the pool each morning for aerobics or helping others. She enjoyed volunteering very much, because she loved people. Bernie kept busy all day until 7 p.m., when she took a break every day to watch Wheel of Fortune. Everyone knew not to call her at that time.

She returned to Pennsylvania after the passing of her husband, Ed, in 2013. Upon her return, she enjoyed attending church services with her son and daughter-in-law at The First Welsh Baptist Church, Plymouth, with her pastor, the Rev. Anita Ambrose and the current pastor, the Rev. John Shypulefski.

Another great thing about Bernie was that even in her 90s, she was tech savvy. She loved to keep in touch with her family and friends online and see their photos on Facebook. She could email, text and video chat or snap a photo and send it electronically.

In addition to her husband, Ed, she was predeceased by her younger brother, Richard. Surviving are her six children: Joan Schreiber and her husband, John, Janet Lozo and her husband, William, Jill Cohen and her husband, David, Judy Aleknavich and her husband, Gary, Jay Humphreys and his wife, Cheryl and Joyce Arena.

Bernie also loved her 16 grandchildren: Megan Markley, Brad Schreiber, Eric Schreiber, Sarah DiGiovanni, Scott Lozo, Ross Cohen, Joel Cohen, Sophia Williams, Christine Biron, Gary Jay Aleknavich, Kelly Aleknavich, Jacob Humphreys, Nick Humphreys, Andy Pac, Jamie Arena and Kaya Arena. Bernie also loved her 20 great-grandchildren: Max, Mason, Jackson, Caden, Betsy, Reid, Aria, Riley, Wesley, Eleanor, Dane, Livi, Dorothy, Ellie, Konnor, Evie, Layla, Nina, Shay and Isa.

Bernie was loved by many, but for the past several years since her husband passed away, she said that she loved to dance with Ed (and they had their moves), but she didn't want to dance with anyone else. We pray that Bernie and Ed have been reunited and are dancing together in Heaven.

Due to COVID-19, there will be no visitation or services at this time. A memorial service will be planned for a future date. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, Forty Fort.

After joining the yacht club discovering that BUZZ and Bern were members was truly a pleasant surprise, being that many years had passed between us. I will always enjoy my memories of the past and present and of late joining for dinner at Ghigiarelli's pizza. EXTRA CRISPY & a Yuengling lager.,
