Franklin Kaye Obituary

Franklin J. Kaye, 80, of Philadelphia and formerly of Plains Township, died Sunday at his home.
Born in August 1923, in Larksville, he was the son of the late Frank J. Kaye and Helen Winslow Kaye. He graduated from Wilkes-Barre Township High School and started his art career working in a theatrical art studio. During World War II, he served three years in the Army Air Corps with the 388 Bomb Squadron in New Guinea and the Philippines, where his paintings and illustrations adorned the planes of multiple squadrons. After returning from war, he went on to become the first student to major in fine arts at the newly founded King's College. He studied art under Augustin G. Pall of the Masters School of Europe and with many other renowned contemporary artists. His works were shown in galleries including his own, Franklin Kaye's Art Shop in Wilkes-Barre and The Picture Place in Philadelphia. Murals and paintings by Franklin can still be found in commercial and private collections throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, particularly in the Wilkes-Barre and Philadelphia areas.
In addition to his accomplishments as an artist, he enjoyed a successful career as an insurance agent. Always active in the community, he served as president of the Rotary Club, president of the Wyoming Valley Art League, member of the Wyoming Lodge No. 468 F. & A.M., former Noble Irem Temple AAONMS of Wilkes-Barre, member of the American Legion, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and member of Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Kaye.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Dolores Household; daughter, Roberta Answini of Florida; sons, Glen of California; and Franklin of Maryland; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Margee Kaye of Wilkes-Barre.
Private funeral and "family only" prayer services will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1 Reed St., Suite 200, Philadelphia, PA 18147, in memory of Franklin J. Kaye.
