Donald Haemmerlein Obituary

Haemmerlein, Donald VALATIE, N.Y. Donald V. Haemmerlein, 83, of Old Post Rd., Valatie, died Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at his home. Born in East Aurora, N.Y., August 31, 1924, he was the son of the late Victor E. and Florence S. (Seligmann) Haemmerlein. Don served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was part owner and president of the Kleeber Agency in Valatie from 1953-1989. He was very family and community oriented and held various officer and board positions for the Niverville Fire Department (50 plus years), the Valatie Rescue Squad (40 plus years), the Boy Scouts of America (60 plus years), First Presbyterian Church (50 plus years), the Northern Columbia County Rotary Club, Catholic Family and Community Services, Columbia-Greene United Way, the 50 Group of Columbia County, Cornell Cooperative Extension, SCORE, and the National Union Bank of Kinderhook (20 plus years). Over the years Don received several awards in connection with his community service which included the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award, Columbia Green United Way Lifetime of Volunteer Service Award in 2006, Northern Columbia County Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, Kinderhook Elks Lodge Outstanding Personal Service to the Community award in 1987 and Friends of Scouting for Columbia County award in 2003. Don was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 60 years, Lucy H. (Hise) Haemmerlein; four sons, John D. Haemmerlein and his wife Patricia of Fla., Robert B. Haemmerlein and his wife Christiane of Tenn., Peter R. Haemmerlein and his wife Sandy of Valatie and Stephen M. Haemmerlein of Colo.; one brother, Karl Haemmerlein of S.C.; eight grandchildren, Lisa Haemmerlein-Scimmenti, Patrick and Alex Haemmerlein, Heather Cole, Philip, Sara, Eric and Mark Haemmerlein; a nephew, Scott Hise of Buffalo, N.Y.; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Machenbach and Jean Conary. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. from the First Presbyterian Church, Valatie with Rev. Stark Jones officiating. Interment will be in Kinderhook Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Raymond E. Bond Funeral Home, Inc., Route 9, Valatie. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Columbia-Greene Humane Society, 125 Humane Society Rd., Hudson, NY 12534 or the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 267, Valatie, NY 12184.

Mrs. Lucy and family,
I am deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Haemmerlein. Our families have been so interlocked over the years from as early as my teenage years. We will miss him. Dear Lucy and family:
We were saddened to learn of Don's passing. You may remember that in the early 70s when I was the Boy Scout council president, Don served as council commissioner. It was a wonderful combination and I really enjoyed working with Don.
