Malcolm Hopper Obituary

Hopper, Malcolm CAMBRIDGE Malcolm Mandeville Hopper, 62, of Center Cambridge Road, died Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Hoosick Falls Health Center. He was the husband of Laurie George Hopper. Mal was a man of passion, determination and faith. His family was his pride and joy. Born December 23, 1947 in Ithaca, N.Y., he was the son of the late Nelson Hopper and Esther Mandeville Hopper. Married to Laurie in 1989, his family includes three children: Merritt Hopper, his wife Maureen, & Mal's grandson, Ian Malcolm Hopper of Denver, Colo., Forrest Hopper of Kingston, N.Y., and Cailin Hopper, a college student in Greeley, Colo.; two brothers: Nelson Hopper and his wife Kathie of Kansas City, Mo, and Peter Hopper and Adrianne Deihl of Greenfield Center; his mother-in-law, Marjorie George of White Creek and a number of aunts, cousins, neices and nephews. In his early years, Mal was active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and the Order of the Arrow. After graduating from Shaker High School in 1965, he received his undergraduate degree from SUNY New Paltz and later earned his master's degree in criminal justice. He worked for the New York State Division of Parole for the majority of his professional career. When he retired in 2004, he was working for the New York State Board of Examiners. After retiring, he enjoyed working at Eastern Mountain Sports in Manchester, Vt. Malcolm was a highly regarded member and elder of the Coila Church where he will be remembered for his children's sermons. A lifelong outdoorsman, he shared his passion for hiking with Laurie, friends and family. He and Laurie were members of the Adirondack 46'ers, having climbed all of the 46 high peaks. He loved the game of golf and skiing with his family. He was equally as enthusiastic about soccer, as a player, coach, and fan. After playing in high school, where he was the captain of the varsity soccer team, and in college including a European tour while playing at New Paltz, Mal continued to be a part of the game by coaching in the LaGrange and Cambridge youth soccer programs. Malcolm was also an accomplished musician and singer, and a member of the Battenkill Chorale. He and Laurie were also active with Habitat for Humanity. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 30 at 3 p.m. at the Coila Church, Route 372, Cambridge. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Malcolm's honor to: The Coila Church, Route 372, Cambridge, NY 12816; ADK-Adirondack Mountain Club, 814 Goggins Road, Lake George, NY 12845 or the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, University DUMC Box 3624, Durham, NC 27710. It´s been well over five years since we have been in touch with this wonderful family but we do have some good memories. We see you are all pretty much all over the country now, but our memories of Mal and his family remain in our hearts.

Mal was simply a class act. Bright, funny and full of
insight. I had the pleasure of being his pledge mate
and Topper house mate, times I continue to treasure.

Laurie & Family:
My deepest sympathy on Mal's passing. I knew Mal from the time he started in Parole and worked in the Manhattan and Bronx Parole Offices together as parole officers and then senior parole officers. Mal was well liked by his fellow/sister officers, and held in high regard by all. May he rest in peace.

Dear Laurie and family,

Life gives us brief moments with another...but sometimes in those brief moment we get memories that last a life time... - Author Unknown

Although our time together as Fraternity brothers at SUNY New Paltz was a brief four years Mal is one of those memories that will last a lifetime. His enthusiasm for life, his sense of humor, his banjo and his singing recall a wonderful time in our lives.
The last time I saw Mal was in 1990, soon after you were married. Laurie, I have never met you but I know you are a special person because Mal couldn’t stop talking about you and the wonderful life you had made together.

All my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time.

Dear Laurie and family

I am very sorry to hear of Mal's passing. Seems shuch a short time ago when I first met him playing his 12 string at Topper House. It was his encouragement that caused me to join the fraternity. Some years later, we often chatted in front of the Dutchess County Office building (on lunch break) when he started working for the Probation Department. He will be missed.

To the Hopper Family- I first met Mal when I pledged Toppers fraternity in college. Mal,already a brother, was upbeat, humorous, and non-judgmental. His infectious smile and positive attitude immediately convinced me I was joining an exemplary group. It is with great sadness I hear of his passing and sincerely hope his faith and love will continually give you comfort.

A wonderful man with a great big heart.
I never forgot his giving and warm,
intelligent nature; living with him
at the "Topper House" he could light
up a room and was a natural leader,

Mal was my close friend and roommate at SUNY New Paltz. Although our lives took different paths after graduation, we did manage to get together once many years later. I have always remembered the great times we had, especially as Toppers fraternity brothers. These memories will be with me always.

My condolences to Laurie, freinds, and families. God be with you.

Sincerely,
