Burton Agata Obituary

Agata, Burton C. HUDSON Burton C. Agata, Professor Emeritus, Hofstra University Law School, died peacefully at his home in Hudson on January 20, 2014 at the age of 85. By his side was his beloved wife and true partner of 58 years, Dale. He also leaves behind his son, Seth; daughter-in-law, Gail; treasured grandson, Adam, and dear cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. The one tragedy in his life was the loss in 1997 of his beloved daughter, Abby before her and his time. His legacy of love can be found in his family, which he always put first, and in the hundreds of lawyers, whose careers, minds and consciences he helped mold in his 40 years as a professor. His values, in descending order, were his family; his country which he proudly served during the Korean War rising to the rank in the Regular Army of captain in the JAG Corps; the law and justice which he mastered and treasured; the University of Michigan from where he graduated with an undergraduate and law degree; and Mel Ott. He was a mensch's mensch. Those wishing to honor his memory may make a donation to the Southern Poverty Law Center, splcenter.org in his name.

Harvey and I were saddened to read in The Times about your loss of Burt. The Brandeis years are now practically history! We were also sad not to be able to share this news with anyone. Sandi Schneider

I would like to extend my condolences to Professor Agata's family and friends. He was my Criminal law professor, and I learned more from him than any other professor, and what I couldn't learn from him he taught me to look up on my own. He taught me self reliance. Something essential to being a lawyer. Thank you, and may your loved ones know you are in a better place. I will never forget you.

Dear Mrs. Agata,

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy
on the loss of your husband. I can not
forget the kindness that both you and
he extended to my late mother, Ruth
Swartz, while she worked for Professor
Agata at Hofstra Law School. My mother
had the greatest respect for him and
spoke highly of his genuine concern for
the students and all his co-workers.
I am sure that the loss of Professor
Agata will be deeply felt among the
whole Hofstra community.
Once again, my sympathy to you and
your family.
