SODERBERG Nancy MacGilvrey Soderberg, 87, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 17 in Jacksonville Beach, Florida surrounded by her children. She was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts on April 6, 1928 to John Angus MacGilvrey and Genevieve Mullen MacGilvrey. She is a graduate of Boston University and Simmons College and Columbia University. She began her career as a member of the teaching staff at the Newton School in Newton, Massachusetts. She later taught English in Tulsa, Oklahoma and at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Flemington, New Jersey. In 1992, she and her late husband Lars retired to their longtime home in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Throughout her life, Nancy devoted her time and energies to many charitable organizations. Most recently, she served as President of the Nantucket Civic League (1997-2000) and as an active board member for many years. She also served on the Board of the Nantucket Historical Association and the Madaket Conservation Association. She was a member of the Nantucket Yacht Club and was the first recipient of its Joan Craig tennis award. She was an avid bridge player and a lively book club member. She and Lars were married for 59 years. She is survived by their four children, Sigrid Pinsky (James) of Palo Alto, CA, Nancy of Jacksonville Beach, FL, Lars (Jane) of Cheery Hills Village, CO, and John (Melissa) of Columbus, OH, eight grandchildren, and her brother-in-law C. Richard (Nancy) of Camden, ME. A private burial will take place in Lawrence, MA. A memorial service will be held in July at St. Paul's Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to the Madaket Conservation Association, the Nantucket Historical Association, or the Nantucket Civic League. Friends are invited to a reception at 10:30am February 27 at her daughter Nancy's home.

My mother, Nancy Nelb Eaton, traveled to Europe with "Mac" the summer of 1953. Mom kept all the correspondence and memorabilia from this trip and I have enjoyed reading about their adventures. They certainly had some memorable ones!
I happened on this obituary notice when I searched to see if "Mac" was still alive. I am sorry for your loss.

We were suprised and saddened by the news that our dear Nancy would not be with us this summer. She was a long time member of our women's book group where we gathered to talk about books and also catch up with each others lives. I will miss Nancy's voice, her humor and wisdom and great hugs most of all. Binth

We are so very sad about this. Thank God she was peaceful & surrounded by all you children. Nancy was a great gal. Always so up-beat, enthusiastic, and loved a challenge. The school in which she taught here, as you know, was in an area with high poverty & high crime. But she jumped right in & she made a huge impact on both faculty & students. To us, that was wonderful & we loved her for it; and there are lots of other fantastic memories. We send our love & prayers to all the Soderbergs.
