PERRY

Thomas Navarre

Thomas Navarre Perry, age 54, of San Diego, CA, formerly of Toledo, OH, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, at home. He was born on September 21, 1959, to Navarre Perry and Carolyn (Flesher) Bolovan in Nelsonville, OH. He attended Ottawa Hills High School, Toledo, OH, and was a 1977 graduate of Torrey Pines High School, Del Mar, CA, where he graduated with high honors, and

attended the USC School of Architecture. Licensed by the California Architects Board, Tom was a talented and successful architect in the San Diego area, and his works stand as an enduring legacy to his everlasting drive to find and create beauty in the city he loved. Many of his designs were featured in design and style publications, and he had the great fortune to practice his passion as his profession. He was also an accomplished scout, sailor, skier and cyclist, having crewed the Newport Beach-Ensenada long distance Pacific Ocean race, cycled US-1 from San Diego to San Francisco, and won numerous scouting and state track awards. Tom had a quick wit, an incredibly sharp mind, and cared dearly for his family, who returned his caring with equal love. Son, brother, nephew, uncle, he will be sorely missed, but never

forgotten in our hearts.

Tom was preceded in death by his uncle and architectural mentor, Jay Vanderlip of Denver, Colorado. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Navarre and Gail Perry (Peterson), San Diego, CA; mother and stepfather, Carolyn (Flesher) and Daniel T. Bolovan M.D., Clear Lake, Indiana; sisters, Lisa (Ted) Matranga (Perry), San Diego, CA, and Dani Bolovan, Toledo, OH; brothers, David Perry, Toledo, OH and Joshua Sherry, San Diego, CA; aunt, Dianne Vanderlip (Perry), Santa Monica, CA; cousin, Sarah (Drew Dominick) Vanderlip, Santa Monica, CA; stepsisters, Cynthia Bolovan, San

Francisco, CA, Karen (Ed) Valentine (Bolovan), Silver Springs, NM, and Margaret Bolovan, Columbus, OH; nephews, David and John Matranga; niece and nephew, Katie and Peter Valentine, and nephew, Dominick Vanderlip.

A celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date. The family suggests tributes be made to The Boy Scouts of America.

"Every great architect is - necessarily - a great poet. He must be a great original interpreter of his time, his day, his age." - Frank Lloyd Wright.

I am truly saddened to hear of his loss--Tom was a really nice person; he helped out my eldest sister when she relocated to California, but I will always remember him helping me when I lost my Red Balloon from Cedar Point in the Parking Lot (I was ill and only 6, and it was a Family Trip--my Father decided to take me alone that day while everyone else older went about the Amusement Park; I wasn't supposed to go, according to my Mother, but Dad insisted.) The Long Day at the Amusement Park ended, and my Father found himself confronted with a flat tire. As he was changing tires, I happened to let go of my Red Balloon that someone at Cedar Point had given me (I was sick, with bronchitis, and wasn't supposed to go--but my Father really wanted me to come along, so my Mother had me wear my Sherlock Holmes Outfit, while everyone else was dressed in T-Shirts, shorts and tennis shoes as it was a warm day in June.) When I lost hold of my red Balloon from Cedar Point, nobody cared except for Tom who said, "I'm going to go get it!" He took off running, as my Balloon had been picked up by the Winds off the Lake, and Tom returned sometime later saying the balloon had gotten away, that it had blown off the Lake and was irretrievable. I didn't care about that silly balloon--I was only glad that Tom had made it back safely! Margaret

Tommy used to work for my father and we used to surf and go see music performances from time to time. I especially enjoyed watching him play in the Del Mar band, Nightshift, he was a percussionist, and their rendition of Junior Murvin's Police and Thieves, was fantastic. At that time he lived in a treehouse in Del Mar. Rest in peace my brother.
