Joseph A. Polka

1933 - 2017

Joseph A. Polka, 84, of Bethel Township, passed away Monday, March 6, 2017, at West Haven Manor, Washington Township. Born Feb. 1, 1933, in Alexandria, Va., he was a son of the late Andrew and Helen (Kanasko) Polka. Joseph lived in Bethel Township for the last 50 years, and worked as a coalminer for Republic Steel, was self-employed in the scrap and salvage business, and also worked as a guard at NUMEC for a time. Joseph was a member of St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Brick Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and playing cards, especially 500, at the Burrell Township Fire Hall. Joseph loved working on the farm, especially gardening. Joseph is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alvina D. (Myers) Polka; children, Alan (Christine) Polka, of Slickville, Michael (Karen) Polka, of Vandergrift, Linda (Anthony Zeitouni) Polka, of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Ken (Dawn) Polka, of Vandergrift, Gloria (Keith) Sherman, of Clinton, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Andrew (Janet) Polka, of Ford City; sister, Evelyn Wise, of Harrisonburg, Va.; and nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, 2017, in the CURRAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, 300 Market St., Leechburg. Additional visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, 2017, in St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2264 Garretts Run Road, Ford City, with Pastor Larry Kemp officiating. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
