Brother Safsten made such an impression on me, one of the influences that helped me decide to investigate and learn about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and major in journalism. This was fall term 1980 at BYU-Hawaii where I had attended as a non-member with my member friend. I had a great time working on the little publication that was our student paper and on the first annual at BYU-Hawaii with him always giving thoughtful advice and encouragement. I was baptized the Sunday before I returned to the mainland December 14, 1980. I wish I would have kept in contact. I went on to attend and graduate from BYU in December 1983, marry in the temple and have six children and now have 12 grandchildren. My two sons and one daughter have served missions and I'm so grateful for the Gospel, Bro. Safsten was the embodiment of Christlike caring. About two years ago we were in Utah and I thought about looking up Ron, I saw he lived in Lehi, but I thought it might be weird, that he might not remember me as I'm sure so many students have reached out to him and thanked him for his mentoring them. I should have done it then. His obituary is just like I remember him, so funny and unconventional. I don't know if you'll even see this as it's been a while since he's died but just wanted to let you know his goodness penetrated me. Love you,

He was a cutie, for sure. I know he was a very interesting person to visit with and be around. He was such a joker. So intelligent.

Condolences to the Safsten family - especially Lori's children. They have lost both grandpas now. I feel sure the grandpas love them very much and will be watching over the grandchildren as life goes on.

God bless you all. I know he will be missed.

P.S. I loved his OB. Somebody else in the family has a sense of humor.

He will be missed I know. God bless, Melva McKenzie

What a great friend he was to our family, especially after my husband passed. My kids to this day know him as Uncle Ron. He will be missed.
