PHILIP LAUVER Obituary

LAUVER, Philip Justin
died on October 2, 2016. He was born in Hillsborough County, Florida, August 13, 1933 to Philip Henry, a Brethren minister and teacher, and Mary Lou, an avid gardener, tending to souls in the church, as well as the soil. Philip Justin was a bright, curious boy and in Dayton, Ohio he graduated high school early, eager to attend Manchester College, in North Manchester, IN. There he met the first love of his life, Joan Essie Taylor. They married, and he graduated from Goshen College, and while working, he managed to tend to his other love: the outdoors. He loved to fish, and camp. (Occasionally missing the birth of a child.) He also loved photography, inventing, building furniture and even a boat. He and Joan had three children, Ellen Lynn, Christopher Lee and Anne Elizabeth. He is also survived by his younger brother, David.
Phil began his career as a public school teacher in Ohio, then obtained an M.S. in Education from Miami University in 1962 followed by a Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1966. After serving as a professor at Indiana University, he came to the University of Arizona in 1971 as a professor in the Counseling and Guidance Department, serving as Head of the Dept for a period. He was serious about his teaching and was devoted to his students. He researched creatively and thoughtfully to improve the practice and teaching of counseling, authoring many publications. One of the areas he specialized in was cross-cultural counseling.
He was blessed with a second love, Lynn Herbert, who joined our family when he was 63 after he lost his first love at 60. He and Lynn enthusiastically traveled, camped, canoed, and birded all over the world. They also welcomed several grandchildren to their lives: Jacob Philip Weber, Joseph Daniel Weber, Avery Gray Lauver and Olivia Rowan Lauver.
Phil was a gentle, humble man, fearsome mainly to fish. To his family, friends and students, he was often a great teacher, and philosopher, and always brought a touch of grace and humor. He will be sorely missed. Remembrances can be made to Point Blue (www.pointblue.org), Southern Poverty Law Center (www.spicenter.org) or HawkWatch International (www.hawkwatch.org). Arrangements by ANGEL VALLEY FUNERAL HOME.

Dr. Lauver's gentle spirit, sense of humor, and compassion made such an impact on me when he was my instructor. I enjoyed his stories told with his trademark twinkle in his eyes.

Phil was my advisor, supporter, and life change agent for me. He was gentle, kind, and almost gleeful when he saw a light go on in someone. I will always be grateful to have had his support, feedback, and training. I will remember him with a smile. And, a heavy heart. My good fortune to have known him. I'm sure everyone who knew him, feels the same.

This is very sad news. As a student I appreciated his calm and accepting manner. It was a pleasure to have a course with him. I am saddened to see him leave us.
