Dear Conway Family,

It is with great sadness that I say goodbye for now to a gracious, kind, selfless and non-assuming friend. As a child and a teen I was often the 7th party at dinners for 6...my parents, Rog and Kay and Rich and Lois. Often during these occasions the six of them would start laughing so hard I would rush in from another room to see what the commotion was. Almost always I had no idea what they were all laughing about but their laughter was infectious and contagious and I too would start laughing so hard I'd be rolling on the floor with tears in my eyes. One story about my mom, Kay and Lois somehow locking themselves in a closet (while looking at hats) with nothing more than a bottle of Scotch is one of the greatest (I'm sure embellished) stories ever told. When I talked to Lois last year her mind and memories were as clear as a bell and when I brought up the dinners Lois said: "Wasn't that something...we had such fun together...we always had so much fun."

When I arrived at St. Thomas as a freshman I discarded my mother's advice about talking to Lois about which classes to take. Three of my classes that first semester were Probability and Statistics, The Old Testament and Logical Analysis. By mid-semester I was begging my father to let me quit college. He told me to hang in there. Well I flunked statistics and got a D in the other two classes. Thereafter, I never once registered for a class without consulting with Lois first. She's probably the reason I was able to graduate with a low B average. Plus, she registered a class for me with Fr. Vincent Rush, the best Prof of my college experience.

Unlike many who totally erased me from their lives when I made such terrible mistakes in my adult life...though I'm sure my actions hurt Lois immensely, she never once brought up my mistakes or turned her life away from mine. She merely said to me with watery eyes..."Oh Michael it's so good to see you. Are you doing okay Mike are you?" Come to think of it, she never said anything like..."I'm praying for you"...which I'm quite sure she was...because that wasn't her style. She was non-assuming and spread her profound faith in Jesus through example. She was one of those rare Catholics who truly lived her life in synchronization with the True Spirit of the teachings of Jesus. I am eternally grateful to have known her and to have been touched, comforted and awakened by her Grace.

As I said to Ed Flahavan last week in an email...'Another Gem in Heaven.' As logical analysis 'postulates' It is the absolute truth.

I am so grateful to have known your Mom and to have benefitted from the gift of seeing real faith in daily life. She was such a fabulous example to all of us as we were growing up and beyond. Always smiling, always kind ....and always keeping my secret about hiding my boots and jackets at your house on the way to school. I know she is receiving her much earned Saintly blessings. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you suffer the grief and rejoice in the peace she now has. I wish I could be there tocelebrate her life wth you. Love you all!
