George A. Shaffer 1923 - 2018
Attorney for 60 Years
NEW HARTFORD - George A. Shaffer, beloved father and grandfather, passed away on March 26, 2018 at the Charles T. Sitrin Health Care Center.
He was born on October 8, 1923 in Utica, NY, the son of the late Louis and Sadah Francis Shaffer. George was a graduate of TR Proctor High School, continuing his education at Hamilton College, until his enlistment in the US Army, during which time he attended Stanford University receiving an ASTP certificate in medicine. After WW II, George returned to Hamilton College, graduating in 1947. He continued his education at Albany Law School, graduating in 1950.
George served in the US Army as a medic from 1943-1946, was wounded during the Battle of Remagen and later received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his acts of heroism.
George married the love of his life, Gloria Donato Shaffer, in 1954. They enjoyed many happy years gardening, traveling and playing bridge until her passing in 1999.
Upon his graduation from law school, George returned to Utica, where he practiced law for more than sixty years, first with Helmer, Shaffer & Johnson and later as a solo practitioner. George served as NY Estate Tax attorney and was a member of the Oneida County and NYS Bar Associations.
George was active in many community activities throughout his life. He served as President of the Board of Catholic Charities, Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and President of the ALSAC Chapter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He served as the Finance Chair and on the Executive Committee of the Oneida County Republican Party and served as the Chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Town of New Hartford, as well as a member of the board of numerous other community organizations. He was also an avid tennis player.
George is survived by his four children and their spouses, Roberta S. Jones and her husband, Hugh, of Syracuse, NY, Patricia Shaffer Bobrow and her husband, Kenneth, of New Hartford, NY, George A. Shaffer, Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. and Christine S. Nassor and her husband, George, of Meredith, NH; his grandchildren, Joshua Bobrow and his wife, Laura, Alex Bobrow, Meredith Bobrow, Sarah Bobrow, Nicholas Jones, Benjamin Jones and Daniel Shaffer. He is also survived by his two sisters-in law, Doris Hobaica and Annette Shaffer. He was predeceased by his sister, Kathryn Shaffer; and brother, Anthony Shaffer.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Wednesday, March 28th at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. The family will receive guests following the Mass.
George's family would like to express their deep gratitude and thanks to the physicians and staff of the 2nd floor rehab unit at the Charles T. Sitrin HCC for the wonderful care of and concern for George during the past two years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider Hope House or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Envelopes will be available at the Mass.
