Ernest Defoe Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun from Feb. 22 to Feb. 24, 2007.

DEFOE _ Ernest John March 18, 1924 - February 19, 2007 Ernie Defoe, husband, father, grandfather, musician, golfer and retired firefighter died peacefully at his Vancouver home February 19, 2007. Survived by his wife of 56 years, Georgie, and his son Alan (Paulette), daughters Tracy (Ray) and Laurel (Angelo) and grandchildren Stefan and Marc, Richard and Steven, Alexis and Daniel. Born and raised in Nelson, B.C. the youngest in his family, Ernie was predeceased by his parents and brothers Frank and Mike. He played the trombone from the age of 12, and was a life member of the Vancouver Musicians Association Local 145. Always a golfer, Ernie was active at Fraserview and most recently Country Meadows. Ernie served in the Regina Rifles and was a veteran of the landing on the beaches of Normandy during World War II. A married golfing musician needs a "day job". In his 35 years as a Vancouver firefighter Ernie worked all over the city, retiring in 1984 as a District Chief. He will be missed by family and friends and remembered when short putts fall, trombones play, or glasses are raised. A memorial celebrating the life of Ernie Defoe will be held Sunday, February 25th at 12:00 p.m. noon at the Firefighters' Club Metrotown, 6515 Bonsor Street, Burnaby BC. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

To the Defoe Family
I was very sorry to hear of Ernie's passing. He was the best at everything he did. To me he was the greatest muscican, golfer and firefighter. I spent many years in the band and working on the fire department with Ernie. He was a gentleman and a mentor to all of us. He will be missed.

To Georgie and all the family. My sincere condolences and prayers are sent to you. I thoroughly enjoyed the many years playing with Ernie in our fire department band where Ernie also served as President of that organization. His effective leadership there and in the fire department will always be remembered and appreciated.
