What a wonderful man, with a wonderful outlook. And integrity.

I met Mr. Hanes some years ago when he and his family very generously hosted the National English Cocker Spaniel Field Trial Championship on their property near Bozeman, Montana. I particularly remember his welcome to the competitors and the gallery at the beginning of the event. He was turned out in a tweed English shooting suit---complete with plus fours---and his genuine enthusiasm for field sports and affection for like-minded people was obvious. Of course, he had his own cocker in tow as he delivered his remarks. He followed the gallery throughout the day and at one point climbed up the side of a ditch by pulling himself, hand over hand, up a walking stick I was carrying. He popped out of the ditch and said "Thanks--isn't this a wonderful day?" I never met him again, but he made an impression I will not forget. I knew nothing of his service to our country until I read his obituary.
I now serve as a volunteer Fish & Game Commissioner in the state of Idaho and I still hunt over cockers. Godspeed, Mr. Hanes
