SARAH SMITH Obituary

Sarah Elizabeth Smith
On January 13, 2022, Sarah Elizabeth Smith, 88, of Solomons, MD and Vero Beach, FL passed away at her John's Island home after a short battle with cancer. She was lovingly surrounded by her immediate family including her two sons, Blair and Greg; and her niece, Beth. Born on March 22, 1933 to William Bedford Glascock and Sarah Catherine Webster, Sarabeth grew up in Indian Head and Solomons, MD with her older brother Bedford Cook Glascock. She attended St. Agnes boarding school in Alexandria, VA and the The University of Maryland and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She graduated with a B.A. in Education. Shortly thereafter she married her college sweetheart, Donald Kaye Smith, and taught elementary school while Don attended law school. They had three sons and resided in Chevy Chase, Rockville and Potomac, MD where they raised their family. During this time, Sarabeth was a member of The Florence Crittenton Home in Washington, DC whose mission was to improve the lives of disadvantaged women. In addition to nurturing her family, Sarabeth excelled in many pursuits including painting, ceramics, needlework, athletics and gourmet cooking. She was an avid daily reader of The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times as well as periodicals on international relations and world history. She was married to Don for fifty five years, and together they enjoyed attending the opera, traveling the world and playing tennis, golf and bridge. Sarabeth played golf into her 82 year and played competitive bridge until the end of her life. Sarabeth had a great love for Strathmore Farm, the area on the Patuxent River where she grew up in Calvert County, MD. She was a devoted member of Middleham and St. Peter's Parish, and she and Don were among the founding members of the 1648 Society, created for the endowment of the Parish. Wintering in Vero Beach, Sarabeth continued her charitable work by volunteering at the Tambourine Shop, which benefited Indian River families in need. Sarabeth was predeceased by her youngest son, Eric Vaughan, in 1993 and her husband, Don in 2010. She is survived by her sons Blair Webster Smith (Stirling) and Gregory Mason Smith (Elizabeth); grandchildren Alexander Smith (Claire), Palmer Smith and Andrew Smith; and great-grandson Arch Smith. Also surviving is her nephew William Glascock (Kathleen) and her niece Elizabeth Wyrough (Page); great-nephews Cook Glascock, Coleman Wyrough and Kiplin Wyrough; and great-nieces Catherine Wyrough and Maura Glascock. A service to celebrate her life will be held at Middlham and St. Peter's Smith Hall in Lusby, MD at 11 a.m. on May 7, 2022.
