KING Dr. EDWARD G. KING, JR. "Ed" Dr. Edward G. King, Jr. "Ed" of McLean, Virginia passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on March 24, 2015 with his family by his side. Born on March 14, 1931 to Cecilia B. King and Edward G. King, Sr., Ed grew up in the community of Fayson Lakes in Kinnelon, New Jersey. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Purdue University and his PhD from Yale University in 1959. His sister, Margaret (King) Van Duyne, introduced him to her college classmate, Phyllis Hall, whom he married in June 1958. Ed worked for the American Plywood Association in Tacoma, Washington for 11 years. In 1970 he and his family moved to McLean, Virginia and he worked for the National Forest Products Association in Washington, DC. In 1988 he started a consulting business, Wood Construction Technologies, where he worked until his official retirement in 2013. He was recognized for numerous accomplishments in his professional life, including the American Society for Testing and Materials Award of Merit and honorary title of Fellow for outstanding leadership in the wood products industry. Married to his best friend for over 56 years, he and Phyllis raised three children and were involved grandparents. They formed a publishing company, MCL Associates, and published two books about the life work of Phyllis's grandparents and parents as medical missionaries (With Stethoscope in Asia: Korea, With Stethoscope in Asia: India). They spent summers at their cottage on Charleston Lake in Ontario, Canada, where they enjoyed hosting family and friends. Ed had an unwavering faith in God that was reflected in the pursuit of excellence, integrity, simplicity, generosity, and hospitality that characterized his life. He was a role model and mentor for many. He served as the longtime Scoutmaster of McLean Boy Scout Troop 1130 and volunteered at Stanton School in Washington, DC. Ed was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for many years where he was an active member of the Cokesbury class, served on committees and developed longstanding friendships. More recently he was a member of Chesterbrook United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee, taught Sunday school and helped in any way he could. He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Margaret (King) Van Duyne; and his son-in-law, Steve Everett. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his children, Marcia (King) Everett, Clifford King, Laurie (King) Skipper and husband John Skipper; his grandchildren, David Everett, Amy Everett, Christopher Skipper and Matthew Skipper; his brothers, Theodore B. King and Michael P. King; his brother-in-law, Thomas A. Van Duyne; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was deeply loved and his absence will be acutely felt by all who knew him. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on April 18, 2015 at 3 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1205 Dolley Madison Blvd., McLean, VA with a reception to follow.
