LILA ASHER Obituary
Lila Oliver Asher
November 15, 1921 - February 11, 2021 Resident of Chevy Chase, MD. An artist who exhibited internationally, Howard University Professor Emeritus, inveterate traveler, member of the distinguished Cosmos Club, she led a vigorous life. At 12, Lila began painting lessons with Frank Linton, a protégé of Thomas Eakins. During WW II, she sketched 3,600 portraits in hospitals for the USO (later publishing "Men I Have Met in Bed"), and taught art at Howard University for 40 years. She is best known for her prints in permanent collections at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, universities, embassies, and many private collections in the US and abroad. No service is planned due to Covid. Memorial donations may be made to Capital Area Food Bank of Washington, DC.

Lila was a favorite teacher of my late husband Dave Freeman, who took art lessons from her in his retirement. She was at all times gentle, tactful--and effective. We became good friends and often enjoyed times together, frequently at the Cosmos Club. Right up to the end of her long and productive life, Lila was eager to learn new things, asking about books to read, discussing ideas, sharing opinions. Her talent and her enthusiasm for life are inspirational.

Lila was an wonderful artist whose entire lifetime body of work has a theme of love. A mother's love, family love, love of God, and love of man kind. I don't recall a single work that deviated from that theme.

Lila Asher, a wonderful artist and one of my favorite teachers when I was a student of hers at Howard University. I learned so much from her, in fact, I borrowed and used some of her teaching techniques when I began teaching. I consider myself very fortunate to have known her and I wish to express my sincere condolences to her family.
