Robert Slechta Obituary

Slechta, Robert Frank of Bedford, MA on 17 December 2012 passed away after a short illness at the age of 84. Born on June 4, 1928 in New York, New York, he graduated from South High School in Worcester, MA in 1945; Clark University (A.B. Biology) in 1949; Clark University (M.A. Biology) in 1951; and Boston University (Ph.D.) in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. Married for over 59 years to loving wife, Betty (Youngren) Slechta. He spent more than 36 years in academics, serving as Professor of Biology and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Graduate School at Boston University for most of his professional career. He retired from B.U. in 1991. During his retirement he devoted his time and energy to the history of Bedford, MA, serving on the Bedford Historic District Commission and Historic Preservation Commission. He was past President and an active member of the Bedford Historical Society and past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Job Lane House, Bedford, MA. He is survived by his wife Betty of Bedford, son Marc W. of Duxbury, MA, daughter-in-law Patricia H.F. of Duxbury, granddaughter Catherine H. of Newport Beach, CA, and grandson John M. of Duxbury. A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Church (UU), 75 Great Road (Bedford Common), Bedford, MA on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bedford Historical Society, 2 Mudge Way, Bedford, MA 01730 or to the Friends of the Job Lane House, P.O. Box 720, Bedford, MA 01730.
