Vicki Walton Obituary

Vicki R. Walton (nee Weiss)

Wisconsin Rapids - Vicki Renee Walton (nee Weiss), 78, Wisconsin Rapids, peacefully passed on to the next life Saturday, November 28, 2020, after suffering a stroke earlier in the week. Born in Fort Dodge, IA to Victor C.A. Weiss and Harriet A. Weiss, Vicki spent her childhood in Fort Dodge, IA where she graduated high school. Vicki completed nurses training at Iowa Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing.

Vicki married Gary Walton of Marathon, IA, on August 22, 1964. Gary and Vicki made Wisconsin Rapids home soon after the births of their 2 sons, Douglas and Kelvin. Vicki worked as a registered nurse and started her career at Riverview Hospital. She was an RN at Family Heritage nursing home and then an RN and nursing supervisor at Edgewater Haven nursing home until her retirement. She loved working with the residents and made many lifelong friends among her fellow nurses.

Vicki loved sports and the outdoors. She enjoyed watching her sons play sports, especially baseball. She could be found on the diamond playing catch with the boys and even throwing batting practice. Vicki was an avid downhill skier and later took up cross country skiing to explore the land around the house. Vicki loved the water whether it was swimming, canoeing or kayaking. She made countless trips with family and her friend Betty Rollo to Nepco Lake and the Wisconsin River to paddle. Vicki also loved taking walks and riding her bike. When her balance began to decline, she adapted and switched to riding a three wheeled Schwinn. As with most things, Vicki had two! Vicki loved to watch the birds and animals at her feeders and the butterflies in her flower garden.

Vicki was an artist in many respects. She would draw, wood carve, build stick furniture and make dolls. Every family member has at least one of Vicki's tree spirit brooms or walking sticks. Vicki loved the performing arts and regularly attended events throughout the state but was particularly fond the Performing Arts Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

Vicki and Gary enjoyed the antique business traveling to flea markets, sales, and auctions; buying and selling their goods. Vicki would often "acquire" some of Gary's finds and add them to her home display.

Vicki adored her grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them. She talked about them nonstop and took more pictures than one would think humanly possible as she fawned over them.

Vicki is survived by sons Doug (Alexis) and Kelvin (Karen); Grandchildren Matthew, Lauren, Ian, Jordan, Felicia and Joey; Special daughter Lorra Metko; many nieces, nephews, and very special close friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband Gary; father Victor; mother Harriet; and brother Vic.

Due to safety concerns and restrictions with Covid there will not be a memorial service at this time. There will be a private burial at the Pioneer Cemetery in the Town of Saratoga. An ice cream social and cookout will be planned for the spring/summer of 2021 to gather and celebrate Vicki's life.

Family and friends can make donations to the Art's Council of South Wood County in Vicki's honor on the Council's website, www.savorthearts.com.

Think of Vicki often. Now a lot of the great nurses I worked with are gone Raejean, Betty Marilyn, Gladys, Jackie, Dr. Thompson and more. Vicki helped me when my son was sick in the hospital and I will always remember her kindness that morning.

Dear Doug & Kelvin,
I was very saddened to read that your mother had passed away. She was a very kind and caring person. I haven't seen her for a long time but years ago when the I35 bridge collapsed in the Twin Cities, she called me to see if our daughter (who was living there at the time) was OK. She will be missed by many people outside your family. My deepest condolences to you all.

Vicki was a nursing school classmate of mine at Iowa Lutheran in Des Moines. ~ I often rode home with her to Fort Dodge. She was the only person in our class who had a car!! ~ We also did out psych rotation together at the VA hospital in Knoxville, Iowa, and I have many great/fun memories of her. She was a very special person.

I met Vicki when I started working at Edgewater Haven in the early '70s. We were co-workers and became life long friends.
My heart goes out to her family. She was a great person and had a great dedication to the residents. She always had time for people.
I will greatly miss her. Jean Colby

Vicki was an excellent nurse. She was a very hard worker, she never left a stone unturned, always made sure the resident had the best care. I learned a lot from her. She enjoyed her work. But she was very kind to all. And I enjoyed working with her at Edgewater.

Doug, Kelvin and families, My condolences on the passing of your Mom. What a great lady. So many happy memories of her. Not only was she a terrific nurse, she was also a great friend. I know I shared my memories with you of you two growing up while I was working with your mom at Edgewater. She used to laugh and tell me I helped raise you two. She loved you both so much and was proud of you both. Sending you both a hug.

(Only one "s'. Your Mom was excited when I started dating my husband because she thought we could be related.)

To all of Vicki's family I extend my sincere condolences upon her passing from this life. I worked with Vicki at Edgewater for years. She was great to work with, always made my job as an O.T. easier. I will not forget her laugh and her enthusiasm for life. May God console each of you.

What a treasure. We became really good friends when she would come to Fort Dodge to see her Mom. Wish you would put this obit in the Fort Dodge Messenger.
