Jane Milmore (1955–2020), screenwriter and producer for “Martin,” “The Hughleys”

Jane Milmore was a producer, screenwriter, and playwright whose TV credits include “Martin,” “The Wayans Brothers,” and “The Hughleys.” Milmore won a People’s Choice Award and an NAACP award for her work on “Martin,” as well as winning a Prism Award for her work on “The Hughleys.” She co-created the short-lived 1993 sitcom “Daddy Dearest,” starring Don Rickles and Richard Lewis. Other shows Milmore worked on with her longtime writing partner, Billy Van Zandt, include “Newhart,” “Suddenly Susan,” and “Yes, Dear.” Milmore and Van Zandt also wrote more than 20 plays together, including “You’ve Got Hate Mail” and “The Boomer Boys Musical,” and Milmore was an actress, appearing in her plays as well as in movies and TV shows.

Monique van Vooren (1927–2020), actress who appeared in “Tarzan and the She-Devil” and “Batman”

Monique van Vooren was a Belgian-American actress known for roles as the she-devil in “Tarzan and the She-Devil” and as the Penguin’s moll, Miss Clean, on TV’s “Batman.” Dressed in purple and white, van Vooren appeared with Burgess Meredith the last time he starred as the Penguin on “Batman,” in the 1968 episode “Penguin’s Clean Sweep.” In the Dean Martin film “Ten Thousand Bedrooms,” van Vooren made a brief but memorable appearance in the title sequence, and she starred as Baroness Katrin Frankenstein in Andy Warhol’s X-rated 3D “Flesh for Frankenstein.” She appeared on TV in game shows including “To Tell the Truth” and “I’ve Got a Secret,” and as a guest of talk show hosts including Johnny Carson.

“Legend” becomes a small word when applied to someone like . Her influence on music is so profound, it is as if she has always been with us, her gospel-tinged siren call both able to kick off a house party or send someone on their loving way into the afterlife. Once she was crowned “the Queen of Soul” fifty-plus years ago, no other artist could assume the mantle, ever. Even after her death, time will likely prove that any attempt to transfer the title will be met by ridicule.
