Lord Snowdon (1930 - 2017), former husband of Princess Margaret
Lord Snowdon, known for his 18-year marriage to Great Britain's Princess Margaret as well as for his work as a photographer and filmmaker, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2017. He was 86. Snowdon, who married the sister of Queen Elizabeth II in 1960, was unusual in that he continued his work – he served as the royal photographer – even while married to Princess Margaret. Born Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1930, he had an established career as a society photographer by the time he was married to Margaret. Nonetheless, his lack of wealth and artistic lifestyle, as well as their discretion while courting, made their engagement a surprise to the public. Their May 6, 1960, marriage was the first televised royal wedding.
