Frank Chapot (1932 - 2016), Olympic equestrian

Frank Chapot, an equestrian who won two silver medals in six Olympics, died June 20, 2016, at an assisted living center in New Jersey. He was 84. The Show Jumping Hall of Fame announced the death, noting that he was under care for Alzheimer's disease. Chapot was born Feb. 24, 1932, in Camden, New Jersey. He married the former Mary Mairs, a fellow equestrian, in 1965. They performed together at the 1964 and 1968 Olympics as a mixed jumping team, though never winning a medal. Chapot, who competed in the Olympics from 1956 to 1976, won two Olympic silver medals riding Gem Twist. In 1990, the horse was named world’s best horse at the World Equestrian Games in Stockholm, Sweden. He also coached the U.S. equestrian team when it won its first gold medal at the 1984 Olympics. Chapot’s team won a silver medal four years later.

Pat Summitt (1952 - 2016), legendary college basketball coach

Pat Summitt, the legendary former coach of the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team, has died of Alzheimer’s disease, according to multiple news sources. She was 64. Summitt coached the Lady Vols basketball team to eight NCAA championships. That was the record at the time of her retirement in 2012. That record has now been passed by Geno Auriemma and the University of Connecticut. She was the first NCAA coach to reach 1,000 victories and she has the most wins of any female basketball coach in NCAA history. Summitt was born in Clarksville, Tennessee in 1952. She played college basketball at the University of Tennessee at Martin and was an All-American. She won a silver medal playing for the USA team in the 1976 Olympics.

Green’s family also announced the death in a news release. Green coached for 13 NFL seasons, making the playoffs eight times. His win-loss record in the NFL was 113-94.

Wally Chambers (1951–2019), former Bears defensive star

Wally Chambers was a star defensive tackle for the Chicago Bears. He was the NFL defensive rookie of the year in 1973 and was a 3-time Pro Bowl selection. Chambers was drafted by the Bears in the first round of the 1973 draft out of Eastern Kentucky University. He recorded an unofficial 14 sacks during the 1976 season. He injured his knee before the 1977 season which greatly affected his abilities. Chambers finished his career with the Tampa Bay Bucaneers in 1979. He became a coach for various college football teams and the New York Jets.

Carlos De Leon (1959–2020), Puerto Rican boxing legend

Carlos De Leon was a Puerto Rican boxing legend who was a four-time cruiserweight world champion. He was the first cruiserweight to win the title twice and then he took it back two more times. He first won the title when he beat Marvin Camel in 1980. After becoming cruiserweight champion a third time, he lost the title to boxing legend Evander Holyfield who had moved down to cruiserweight. He won it back for a record fourth time against Sammy Reeson in 1989. Later, he coached boxers in Buffalo, New York.

Sam Wyche (1945–2019), head coach took Cincinnati Bengals to Super Bowl

Sam Wyche was the last head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals to take the team to the Super Bowl. Despite a high-powered offense, led by quarterback Boomer Esiason, the Bengals lost Super Bowl XXIII on a thrilling last-minute drive by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana. It was a cruel twist of fate for Wyche, who had previously coached Montana as part of the 49ers coaching staff that won Super Bowl XVI, coincidentally also against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Morgan Wootten (1931–2020), legendary high school basketball coach

Morgan Wootten was a high school basketball coaching legend who coached DeMatha High School in Maryland from 1956 until 2002. Wootten turned the school into a basketball powerhouse winning five national championships and producing many NBA players including Hall of Famer Adrian Dantley and Danny Ferry. He has the second most career wins of any high school coach and is one of four high school coaches in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Most incredibly, for 31 years in a row, every senior on his team won a college scholarship.

Roger helped his nephew Floyd become one of the greatest boxers in history. Floyd was a world champion in multiple weight classes and finished his career with a record of 50-0.
