Pierre Boulez (1925 - 2016), renowned French conductor
Pierre Boulez, the world-renowned French conductor who was a major force in modern classical music, has died. He was 90. Boulez, who once served as the principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic, died Tuesday at his home in Baden-Baden, Germany. The death was confirmed by Hamid Si Amer, a spokesman for the Paris Philharmonic. No cause of death was announced, however.

Greg Hudgens, a former firefighter who was the father of actress Vanessa Hudgens, died Jan. 30 of cancer. He was 65. The actress, who became known for her starring role in the "High School Musical" series, announced her father's death as she was preparing to perform as Rizzo in "Grease: Live" on Fox TV. She tweeted a statement about his death, which occurred the day before the show, as well as noting, "Tonight, I do the show in his honor." Hudgens revealed in August 2015 that her father had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

Signe Toly Anderson (1941 - 2016), Jefferson Airplane founding member
Signe Toly Anderson, a singer who was one of the original members of the Jefferson Airplane, has died. She was 74. Anderson died Jan. 28 at her home in Beaverton, Oregon. Her daughter, Onateska Ladybug Sherwood Anderson, confirmed the death. She said her mother had chronic obstructive lung disease. Anderson left the band after its first record and after giving birth to her first child; she was replaced by Grace Slick. Anderson performed live with the band Oct. 15, 1966, for two sets. She offered a farewell to the fans, saying, "I want you all to wear smiles and daisies and box balloons. I love you all."

Benoit Violier (1971 - 2016), acclaimed chef
Chef Benoí®t Violier, whose acclaimed Le Restaurant de l'Hotel de Ville in Lausanne, Switzerland, was ranked recently atop a list of the world's best high-end dining establishments, was found dead at his home Sunday of a likely self-inflicted gunshot wound, police reported. Violier was 44. The restaurant in western Switzerland, which Violier operated with his wife, Brigitte, was the recipient of three Michelin stars, a mark of top quality in haute cuisine. Violier took over the restaurant in 2012 after having worked under its previous owner, Philippe Rochat, for 15 years. Rochat became a mentor and father figure to Violier over the years before passing the torch.
