When , an Alabama-born college student studying music in Boston, married in 1953, she knew she was signing up for a life of dedication to social justice. As her husband's partner and most trusted confidant, she supported his ceaseless work to try to end racial discrimination in the United States, and then carried forward his legacy upon his assassination in 1968. She spent the following decades speaking out for civil rights herself—for African Americans, and also for women and LGBT people, as well as for the oppressed Black citizens of apartheid-era South Africa.

Celebrating Jackie Robinson Day (video)
Jackie Robinson changed baseball when he stepped onto the field on April 15, 1947 for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The first Black player in the major leagues since the 1880s, he was under tremendous pressure to succeed—and succeed he did. His talent and ability as a ballplayer was undeniable and he maintained his composure in the face of racist taunts both on field and off. Before the end of the 1947, other African Americans would join him in the big leagues, including fellow future Hall of Famer Larry Doby.
