David Hammack Obituary
David Hammack (95) died on May 19th, 2024 following the death of his wife, Sondra on April 21st, 2024. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary in March of this year.
David was born in San Diego, California and had many professions throughout his life. He did refugee relief work in Germany after WWII, was a science teacher, pastor, volunteer fire chief, construction contractor, electrical contractor, and consulted for the Indian Health Service.
David was a pioneer rock climber in Yosemite Valley in his youth. He brought his passion for the mountains to New Mexico in 1955 and established many classic routes in the Sandias.
He was also an accomplished mountain runner and won the La Luz Trail Race in his age group several times in his later years. He traveled the world in retirement, climbing in the Himalayas, East Africa and Peru. He was known and loved by the climbing and hiking community in the Sandias where he knew the trails and crags intimately, especially the La Luz Trail. He was a constant presence on the ditch banks of Corrales well into his 90s.
David and Sondra are survived by three daughters and two sons, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, plus the marvelous extended family they created and fostered in Corrales.
Those who were fortunate to be a part of this family will miss them deeply.

Wow just thinking of David had to look in the obituary even though I'm saddened of him and Sandra gone I will never forget him he gave me my start as an electrician contractor and electrical inspector hammock inspired my life and I suspect we'll continue on inspiring my life rest in peace Dave and Sandra God bless Rob Garcia

David had a profound impact on my life, as well as countless others. He was my mentor and role model as I started my own construction company after working for him for several years. When I first moved to NM, his home was a welcome refuge for me and so, so many others over the years. He was one of a kind and will be missed greatly. His memory will live on for generations to come.
