Joseph Barker Obituary
Dr. Joseph Barker passed away on May 18, 2024 after a short illness. Born in Kenton Ohio, to parents Robert and Betty Barker, he lived in Findlay and graduated high school in West Alexandria. He went to college at Miami University of Ohio, and earned his medical degree at Ohio State Medical School. He opened a family practice in Newark Ohio, making house calls as well as in-office visits.
He and another physician covered the emergency department at the local hospital part-time, and Dr. Barker eventually transferred to emergency room practice full time.
He took up snow skiing and began traveling to the Rocky Mountains. He loved the southwest so much he moved his family to Albuquerque in 1973.
He started work at Lovelace Medical Center, became the director of the emergency department, and eventually served on the board of medical directors. After decades caring for patients, he volunteered at several organizations, eventually volunteering at the Wildlife Rescue in Albuquerque. He transported birds and other small animals to other volunteers who rehabilitated them for release back to the wild.
Dr. Barker was an avid Harley Davidson rider and took many trips across the country both with friends and his son Marcus. He loved telling the stories of his adventures. Dr. Barker was always ready to make someone laugh and share his wisdom.
He found great joy and happiness with his wife of 48 years, Sue. They enjoyed many activities together over the years, including golfing, skiing, traveling, entertaining, and playing games. They especially loved watching their children and grandchildren grow up.
He is survived by his wife, Sue, his three daughters; JoMay and husband Brian, Jenni and husband Dan, Lisa and husband Michael, his two sons; Marcus, and Michael and partner Gail. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Max and wife Jamie, Betty, Kennedy, Landon, Wesley, Aiden, Zachery, and great-grandson Gus.

He was a great man and physician. i worked with him at the Urgent care on Academy and Wyoming. I, also grew up in Ohio-near Miami University and we shared stories of Ohio occasionally. My prayers are with his family Marilyn B.
