Nina Michaels Obituary

Nina R. Michaels

Nina R. Michaels passed away on November 22, 2021, holding the hands of her husband and children, after

battling Multiple Myeloma cancer for 10 years and running out of treatment options that were safe and acceptable. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James C. Michaels; her children Carissa & Scott Mitchell of Albuquerque; Daniel Michaels of Nashville; and Joshua Michaels of Colorado Springs; as well as grandchildren Evan & Ashley Mitchell, with great-grandchildren Genesis, Liam & Amelia, of Tacoma; Madeline Mitchell of Santa Cruz; and Charlotte & Jayson Carruth of Albuquerque.

Nina was born in Kermit, Texas on February 19, 1941 to Ray & Lola Fielder, graduated from Pepperdine College in California with a degree in Biology, lived in Madison Wisconsin for 32 years and moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico 24 years ago to be near her grandchildren.

Nina went back to school at the age of 40 to earn a degree in Nursing which she worked in until retiring in 2010. Her main interests were raising 3 children; worshiping in church, especially the choir; running a doctor's office; collecting antiques and finishing furniture; knitting sweaters, bags, and Christmas stockings; raising Devon Rex cats; enjoying the woods in her camper and at Cedar cabin; and, most recently, singing in the Young at Heart Gospel Choir.

Thanks go to Dulcinea Quintana, Nina's oncologist for 10 years, and to the Good Samaritan Society Hospice workers for their care.

Kitty & I knew Nina when we all put on cat shows as Cats Of Wisconsin. She was a wonderful friend and a great colleague. We missed her when she moved to New Mexico, will miss her more as she´s gone.

I heard the news and my heart goes out to Jim and the family.
When I saw the message about discontinued medicine treatment for Nina, I was attempting to find a way to drive there and see her... now, sadly for me, too late to do that.
But I am encouraged I will see her again in heaven!
Both Nina and Jim had much to do with keeping me intact in my university/alternate service/early Christian years and I owe them an immense debt of gratitude!
Nina was a big sister to me and revealed to me the wonders of the simple egg and cheese omelette with chocolate milk! I countered with a few pasta and meatball dinners... but nothing compared to her generosity!
Nina was also there in the University Hospital in the capacity of nurse and friend during my near-death car accident/head injury in 1996.
I know Nina will be rewarded for all her love shown to her family, me, and so many others!
I do regret not being closer in touch with her and Jim over these often tumultuous years... and because of my own family commitments can't be there for Nina's memorial. However, nothing will remove the ongoing and loving memories I will have.
