Sonia James Obituary
Sonia James, beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully at her Albuquerque home surrounded by her loving family on November 18, 2024.
Sonia was born on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1936 to Filo and Emily Sedillo. Sonia grew up in Los Lunas, New Mexico and later moved to Belen, New Mexico, where she graduated from Belen High School.
Sonia attended the University of Missouri. It was there she met the love of her life, her handsome blue-eyed Greek husband Tony James. They were married in 1961 and raised their four children in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tony passed away on November 10, 2012.
Sonia enjoyed art and creative endeavors. She was a long time member of New Mexico Garden Clubs and a Master Gardener. Sonia loved gardening, travel, cooking, and spending time at the family cabin in the Jemez mountains.
Sonia is survived by her son Kino James (Kelly) and her daughters, Tara Bishop (Jim), Erika Bernardone (Dean) and Ariana West. Sonia is also survived by her six grandchildren, Louis Bernardone, Alyssa McKeown, Skye and Tao West, Joshua and Audrey James. She adored all of her grandchildren who fondly called her Yia Yia.
Services for Sonia are set for Friday, December 6, 2024 at 2:00pm at FRENCH University Chapel. For further details, please visit our online guest book at

I met Sonia in the late 60's. Through the years we played Bridge, had dinner parties, spent time at her cabin in Jemez Springs and enjoyed each other's company. Had many laughs together. I will miss her and her smile.

Sonia and I go back many, many years. I first met her when she came to Washington, DC in around 1958 where I was working. After I got married and moved to Albuquerque, we watched our children grow up together. She has been a very special friend all these years and I will miss her.
