Karanja was still Leroy when I started my professional reporting career at The Commercial Appeal, in 1978. He was among the role models who welcomed and helped me understand how to present myself as a reporter, and always had good advice. I’ve just now retired from 40 years as editor of the weekly Hickman County Times in Centerville, and much of my approach to journalism here — as a one-man shop — came from that busy Memphis newsroom, Leroy and many colleagues. I am not surprised that he was a great mentor as well as an accomplished reporter and editor!! My prayers to his family, friends and colleagues.
