E. Nowlan Obituary

Easter Marie Dunn-Nowlan passed away on Feb. 9, 2017, at 6:31 a.m. She was living in Portland, Ore. Marie was preceded in death by her mother, Welthy; her two children, Michael and Linda; her brother, John; and sister, Linda. She was born on Oct. 7, 1932, to parents John Cyrus Dunn Sr. and Welthy Madge Nichols in Portland, Ore., where she grew up with her three siblings: her brother, John Cyrus Dunn Jr (Diane), and sisters, Donna (Dewey) Lake and Joann (Ray) Brand. Later in life Marie sought out and found their youngest sister, Linda Joy Miller. Marie was married to Gene Nowlan and they lived in Anchorage, Alaska, for many years. Marie had three children: her sons, David and Michael Pingrey, and her daughter, Linda (Scott) Easler, who blessed her with her two grandchildren whom she dearly loves, Jaime Valdez and Nevin Easler. Marie spent many happy days with them. She has five great-grandchildren. Marie worked for many years at Alascom Communications in Anchorage, Alaska, until she retired. Her favorite hobbies were genealogy and scrapbooking. Marie also made beautiful crafts such as lampshades, pillows and floral arrangements. She enjoyed listening to good music and was amazing at "name that tune." She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed going to the temple and worked diligently on her family history. She had many callings in the church, teaching genealogy, and working with the young women, where she taught them sewing and various crafts. She loved attending relief society. She attended services at the Strawberry Chapel regularly in Anchorage and worked diligently on Genealogy at the Maplewood Chapel as well. For the last 14 years Marie resided and was lovingly cared for at Cascade Terrace Nursing Center on SE 122nd in Portland, Ore. "Uh-huh ... that's right!" became her signature phrase. Her family is very grateful to them for all of the wonderful care they gave her. Marie loved them all! Everyone enjoyed her infectious laughter. She will be sorely missed. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 11801 SE Mout Scott Blvd., Portland, OR 97086; 503-771-1117.

We would take Jerry`s specialty Smoked Salmon and a big Hershey Bar over to her. Marie would eat the Salmon first like it was candy and every bite she would say yum yum! She loved smoked salmon. We loved her and will miss her.

My thoughts are with the family during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there is a hope for our love ones lost in death can be reassuring.

We Love You Marie

Marie. Nanny as she was referred to by her grandchildren as she'd scoop them up in her arms, smothering them with hugs & kisses, not letting go until SHE was darn well ready to let go. She was the rock, the foundation of our fledgling family. Every Sunday for the first five years or so while living in Anchorage, she religiously showed up to scoop the kids up again and again to take them to church. Marie didn't allow any concessions on that front.

Mother in Laws have a way of insisting they get their way don't they! Must be the Irish in her I'd always tell my wife / her daughter Linda! Our son has a hyphenated first name, as she was insistent he be named Michael, honoring her own dearly departed son. Finally concessions made so be it .we named our son James-Michael Nevin. It was important to her as where so many things it seemed.

Love is steady & constant, comforting and warm. Marie never wavered. Her deep faith in the Lord and conviction of her own moral righteousness was free from pretense. Her devotion to the Church, her family and the people in her life was genuinely deep-rooted and heartfelt. Her laughter and giggles were contagious. She could be stern too and would not tolerate disrespect or ill-mannered behavior from those around her.

We loved her deeply. Our children, Jaime & Nevin have a tenderness about them and I attribute that character being nurtured by both their own mother, Marie and Gene too. I am grateful to her for bringing my wife into the world and being there throughout our family's journey together.

While Marie will be dearly missed we may allow ourselves to be joyous; she is now side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder, hand-in hand with her daughter Linda and son Michael in Heaven. May God Bless you Marie.

Love Scott, Nevin & Jaime
