James Leighton Obituary

James Daniel "Dan" Leighton, 69, passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday, December 20, 2016. A veteran of The Vietnam War, he returned stateside and later retired in 1994 as a Army Master Sergeant.
Dan is survived by his devoted wife of 19 years, Bea Leighton. Dan is also survived by his sister Dorothy Simmons of Covington, VA; and his children: Samantha Hanner, and husband, Paul, of Cape Girardeu, Missouri; James "JD" Leighton, Jr. of Milton, Florida; Renee Oakley of Raleigh, NC and John Lewis Leighton stationed at the Norfolk Naval Base, VA. Dan is also survived by his stepchildren: Chris Stanley, and wife, Rachell, of Stafford, VA; Tammy Deuterman, and husband, Tim, of Stafford, VA; John Stanley, and wife, Kandi, of Mooresville, NC; and 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Dan is preceded in death by his parents, John and Carlena Leighton, his brothers John "Whimpy" Leighton and Ernest "Ernie" Leighton and his stepdaughter, Sondra Stanley.
Dan was born in Covington, VA, which became a cherished and frequently visited vacation destination. After moving from the Dumfries area in 1997, Dan and Bea have resided in Stafford, VA, where they enjoyed hosting family & friends at their new home with cookouts and pool parties. Dan loved fishing, cruising with his wife, and travel. Dan was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1503 and often reflected on his tours of active duty especially his time in Germany.Viewing is to be held at the Mullins & Thompson Funeral Home at 186 Shelton Shop Rd, Stafford VA on Wednesday, December 28th, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. And the funeral service to be held in the Mullins Chapel at 10:30am on Thursday, December 29, 2016.With interment at Quantico National Cemetery at 12:00pm. Immediately following the service the family will receive relatives and friends for a celebration of life to be held at the VFW Post 1503.In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the VFW Post 1503, 14631 Minnieville Rd., Woodbridge, VA 22193.

Sorry to hear of Danny's passing,our condolences to Family.Danny and his Brother's and Sisters were my first cousins and we shared many get together,birthdays,picnics at granmaw Lee house in the holler just lots of fun times talked with him a couple years ago always good seeing him.Gene & Vicki Lee. I am very sorry to hear about Danny's passing. He, Mike Boyd and I were high school running buddies and we're aLways together until we graduated and left for the military.
