Joseph Tamas Obituary

Long time Alaskan, Joseph Stephen Tamas, Jr., died March 20, 2012 of natural causes in Anchorage. He was 73. No service will be held at the request of the decedent.

Joseph was born on October 29, 1938 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Helen and Joseph Tamas. He attended schools in several states, eventually joining the Air Force for a career of 20 years, 2 days. He was stationed in Alaska once in 1964 and again in 1967 permanently making Alaska his home from that year on. He retired from the Air Force in 1977 and went to work for the State of Alaska, Department of Fish & Game, retiring from there after 16 years.

He was a member of the Rottweiler Club of Alaska and the Moose Lodge for many years.

He met his wife, Dian in 1980 and married her in 1981. And together they had a wonderful marriage for 31 years. Joseph always joked that "Dian was his second best wife, so she had to try harder".

Joseph's other love was fishing. He had a cabin on the Kenai River spending nearly every weekend there during his working years, and the summers after his retirement. His ashes will be laid to rest there. He loved people and did whatever he could for them in general - whether it was plowing their driveways or cooking up something for them. He particularly enjoyed stuffing bags at Halloween with items little demons rarely received; and making up junk food boxes for his friends' children at Christmas.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Dian; his sons Jordon Tamas (Texas) and Jeff Pechin (Florida); his daughters Elizabeth Potter (Florida) and Barbara McCleary (Arizona); his beloved granddaughter Danielle Gilbreath (Washington) and grandsons Kirk Chapman (Oregon), Joseph Potter (Alaska); brother Dennis Spencer, sisters MaryBeth Recupido and Marlene Aeillo, and his beloved Rottweiler Tuco and Schipperke Bond.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Joseph Tamas, sister and brother-in-law Paula and Butch George, and brother, Donald Spencer.

The family requests any donations be made to their favorite charity.

Thanks for being you, my friend. I'll never forget your posh outhouse on the Kenai and your monthly happy hours. My mom still displays your painted gold pan on her wall. Thanks for the memories.

We always looked forward to our club Christmas parties knowing Joe was bringing something yummy. He was a fun guy to talk to, especially when he talked about his cabin on the Kenai.
