Murray Rhodus Obituary

Murray Dean Rhodus, 75, of Anchorage died Jan. 4, 2011 at Providence Alaska Medical Center.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Spenard American Legion Post 28, 7001 Brayton Drive, with a potluck to follow.

Murray was born Sept. 2, 1935, in Stoneham, Colo. He graduated from Alameta High School in Denver in 1952. He attended the University of Colorado for two years. He served in the Navy and Army during the Korean Conflict. Murray came to Alaska in 1973. He married Nona Pumphrey on Nov. 1, 1975. Murray worked as a truck driver for many years.

No matter what Murray and Nona did, they had a good time, being together and holding hands, even after 35 years of marriage. They loved motor home traveling. In 1997, they finally realized their dream of being "full timer," living in their motor home and traveling the lower 48 for 3-plus years. Murray loved growing his own tomatoes and cucumbers in his greenhouse.

Murray was a member of the Spenard American Legion, serving on their E-Board, a member of Wasilla VFW Post 9365, the FOE Aerie 4207 and Teamsters Local 959.

His family wrote: "Even with the nickname "Grumpy" (and proud of it), Murray was a good friend, a real softy, especially for babies and baby animals. He was always very protective of his Noni and told her 'I love you' everyday. Murray was a proud Grampa, especially when watching Zak play soccer."

The family thanks the Renal Care Unit staff at Providence Hospital, Liberty Dialysis and Dr. Jeremy Gitomer and his caring staff. Their warmth and care meant so much to the family.

"Our beloved Murray is going to be deeply missed by all, especially by his family."

Survivors include his wife, Nona; daughter, Christy Rhodus; step-daughters, Vicki Price (Stephen Hendricks), Nanci Price, D.C. (Daryl Monk);stepson, Tom Price (Rannvieg); sisters, Donna Hamilton and Kay Petersen (Frank); much loved grandchildren, Zachary, Tommy, Casey and Carter; numerous nieces and nephews and their families; and many friends, especially Hippie and his Texas Hold 'em buddies.

Arrangements are with Cremation Society of Alaska; www.alaskacremation.com.

He may have 'Grumpy' to some, but he will always be 'Papa Smurf' to me. He was kind and had a wonderful sense of humor .
