Steve Hager Obituary

Eagle River resident Steve Hager, 59, passed away at Bulchitna Lake, Alaska on Sept. 15, 2014. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 4:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 16430 Old Glenn Highway in Chugiak, Alaska. There will be a gathering at the Eagle River Alehouse following the service. Steve was born in Paintsville, Ky., on November 13, 1954, to Nathanial and Patricia Hager. He began working for Alaska Airlines when he moved to Yelm, Wash., in 1990; in 1996 he transferred to Anchorage, Alaska. Steve loved the outdoors, flying, fishing, hunting, woodworking, hiking and sailing. A lot of people will miss Steve's dry humor, generous nature and good friendship. Steve had a great capacity to show resilience and optimism in the face of adversity, and in that he leaves an example to his family and friends in this difficult time. Flying in the Alaska wilderness gave Steve a preview of his ultimate destination and, in the words of John Gillespie Magee Jr.'s classic poem: Steve has topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace where lark, or even eagle flew. And while with silent, lifting mind I trot, The high trespassing sanctity of space; Put out my hand and touched the face of God. Survivors include his wife Roxane Hager and son Eli Hager. Arrangements are with Janssen's Eagle River Funeral Home.

Rox & Eli,
You are both in our thoughts and prayers everyday. We take comfort in knowing that Steve is smiling down at all of us. We will always remember him as the generous friend he was. Please stay in touch with us as we want to continue a lifelong friendship as well. Love you guys!

October 14, 2014

Roxane, My husband also died at age 59, 10 years ago. This will be the hardest journey of your life, but you will get through it! I would suggest saving a couple of his shirts to wrap yourself in, get a special notebook and journal, walk everyday, if you can find a friend to walk with even better - especially one you can tell Steve stories to.
Don't make ANY important decisions for at least a year, and most importantly let the tears flow. (Tear soup is a good grief book) If you would like to talk email me, [email protected]. I promise you it will get easier. He will always be with you.

October 11, 2014

Steve, today was not a good day. I had to start packing your clothes up for our move. Everything reminded me of you, and how much I miss your touch. Days are getting harder. I miss you my love. Rox

October 10, 2014

Steve, Every day you are missed, more than the day before. I will ALWAYS remember your handsome face, and how much you loved Eli and me, and always wanted what was BEST for us. You are missed Sooooo much, BUT NEVER will be forgotten. Till we are together again, you will ALWAYS be in my heart. How we loved you, And you knew. We love you forever. Roxane and Eli

Dear Roxane and Eli,
Our most heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Steve was a good friend and a very special person. Of all the people I've ever known he was one of the very best, a true class act. May you find peace in the knowledge that Steve is in good hands, and that you will see him again one day.

September 22, 2014

I also went to Iona with Steve and hadn't seen him in many years. The last time we saw each other was at Artie and Lynn Lynch's house on Bainbridge Island. Although it had been at least 15 years since we saw each other, it felt like no time had elapsed. That was also when we met Roxanne. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Dear Roxane and Eli, I´m so sorry to hear about your loss. I only met Steve once a long time ago, when I visited you in Seattle together with Jonas and Till, then twelve and six years old. All three of us enjoyed the days with you and Steve and especially the trout fishing at a nearby lake and flying with his plane. And Steve became a friend especially to my sons within a very short time.

Well. How do I get over the shock? This is moving way too fast for me. Steve was a man that didn't waste any time with anything. He was constant motion. Every time I boarded an Alaskan flight, I hoped he was behind the wheel.

I am still in shock. My heart goes out to Roxanne and Eli. I don't know what else to say.
