Amelia Zurawski Obituary

Amy Zurawski passed away in her home in Albuquerque, N.M., on Sunday, October 16, 2016. She was born April 3, 1920, Amelia Elizabeth Maroun in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, the oldest of 11 children.

During World War II, she met her husband Tadeusz (Ted) Zurawski at a dance. They married in March 1947, and started their family of five children. Ted taught himself electronics and moved the family to Alamogordo, N.M. Ted started a career with Land-Air at
Holloman Air Force Base tracking missiles. Tragically Ted passed away in August 1962.

Amy stayed in Alamogordo to raise her family. She soon started her career with Civil Service at Holloman AFB to support her young family. Very well liked, she made many lifelong friendships at Holloman and the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was an active member of the Rosary Alter Society.

In 1970, she transferred to Kirtland AFB and moved her family to Albuquerque N.M. In 1983, she transferred to Lackland AFB in San Antonio and retired as Chief Accountant in 1986. She returned to her Albuquerque home where she devoted herself to her children and grandchildren. Raising her family, Amy insisted each child went straight from high school to college and was proud they each earned their college degree; three with advanced degrees.

Amy was a devoted Catholic never missing weekly service at the St. Bernadette Church. She loved her Lebanese culture and was a great cook, teaching her daughters and granddaughters her most popular recipes. She loved talking around the kitchen table drinking a hot cup of English tea. She loved playing cards; games like Scat and Cribbage. She enjoyed watching baseball, hockey and football where she rooted against the Dallas Cowboys on a weekly basis. Every year, she belonged to a bowling league until a torn rotor cuff forced her to retire at age 86.

She is survived by her children, Jeanette Goldsmith and her husband Terry of Alamogordo, N.M., Ted Zurawski and his wife, Patti of Manassas, Va., Joan Humble and her husband, Albert of Edgewood, N.M., Dwight Zurawski and his wife, Loretta of Golden, Colo., and Dale Zurawski and her husband, Geoff Slaff of Santa Barbara, Calif.
Amy was loved by her 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; Darian Jaramillo and her two daughters, Taylor and Lauren, Gary Goldsmith and his son, Colby, TJ Zurawski, Kelly Clark and her children, Sawyer and Alice, Charity Shorey and her five children, Kori Ramirez, Katie Humble, Kevin Humble and Kacie Humble and her son, Bentley, Jeffrey Zurawski, Daniel Zurawski, Tad Slaff, Margo Slaff and Dena Slaff.

Amy was from a big family. Her brother and sisters were Mae Green (deceased), Martha Smith and her children Jaqueline (deceased), Sandy, Terry, Susan and Brenda (deceased), Bessie Horan and her children Brian, Jamie and Mary Susan, Adele Stroud (deceased) and her children Linda, Marilyn, Tommy, Mark, Robert and Christina, Father Albert Maroun, Joseph "Butch" Maroun, Shirley Lewis and her boys Kelly, Ted and Bobby, Lillian Hogan (deceased) and her daughter Brenda, Virginia MacNeil and her son Andrew and Norman Maroun (deceased).
