Juanita Winston Obituary

Juanita Winston passed away peacefully at home in Alice, Texas on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the age of 101. She was born to Swanzy Die Childress and Ora Gertrude Perry Childress on August 22, 1916 in Miles, Texas. She was one of three sisters, all of who lived to be 101. Growing up in Miles, she enjoyed spending time at her father's variety store.

She attended Sul Ross State Teachers College and Southwest Texas State Teachers College, earning a bachelor's degree in education and completing teacher certification.

On July 1, 1938, she married Fred Winston. Originally the couple lived in West Texas, where Fred started an auto parts supply business. In 1943, they moved the business to Alice, Texas, which then had a booming agricultural and oil economy. They raised four children. Eventually they also became ranchers. In the mid 1980s they retired from the auto parts business and focused on ranching, family and travel.

Juanita was a loving wife and mother and was also community-minded. She served as PTA President and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. A person of many interests, she enjoyed playing the piano, painting, participating in ranching activities, and going on family vacations, including a trail-riding adventure in Wyoming. She and Fred traveled to Canada, Europe, Africa and China. Relatively late in life, Juanita learned to use a computer and traded stocks on the internet. She was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Swanzy and Gertrude Childress; her husband, Fred Winston, and her sisters, Homa Lee Ray and Willie Mae Ray.

She is survived by her children: Perry (Sara) Winston, Sam (Kathy) Winston, Glynda (Kirk) Baxter, and Lynda (Jim) Scoggins; grandchildren, Kirk (Michelle) Baxter, Gray Scoggins, Leah (Shane) Tindall, Scott (Heather) Scoggins, Christine (Jay Hollinsworth) Winston, Deborah (Stephen) Blume, Lana (Jay) Carr, Tricia (Tommy) McCrea, and Hilary (David Parker) Winston; and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel.

Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, 111 N. Adams St., with Pastor Dale White officiating. Interment will follow at Alice Cemetery.

The family would especially like to thank the wonderful, loving companions and caregivers of their beloved mother and grandmother: Pat Purser, Penny Long, Gracie Alvarez, Laura Robertson, and Doris Beish; as well as the caring and compassionate Nurses on Wheels.

Arrangements are entrusted to Holmgreen Mortuary, 2061 E. Main St., Alice, Texas.

To the family of Juanita Winston,
I only knew Mrs. Winston through Sam and Perry when we attended high school together. My wife, Lou, and I continue to see Sam and Kathy on a regular (but not often enough) basis. We feel that we knew her through her son, Sam, since family is perhaps the greatest legacy one can leave. And what a legacy, including 21 great grand children! She really set the bar high for her family to follow.
We know your hearts will soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life lived both well and full. We also have the promise of a reunion with family when we finally meet Jesus. But, many of you might have to wait quite a while since you have Juanita's genes.
You are all in our thoughts and prayers.
