Austin Davis Obituary

Austin Woodrow "Woody" Davis, age 89, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, August 28, 2018.

Viewing and family visitation will be at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. from 8-10:00 a.m., Friday, September 7, 2018 followed by a graveside service at Llano Cemetery 2900 S. Hayes St. at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Ken Cole of St. Stephens United Methodist Church as Officiant. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home.

Woody was born March 30, 1929, near Selfs, TX to parents Henry Luther Davis and Naomi Wilkins Davis.

Woody Davis moved to Amarillo when he was 19 years old and went to work for Ivan "Toots" Spradlin, who owned two auto service stations. As he proved his value as an employee, Woody became the manager for both stations. Later he bought one of the stations near downtown and operated it successfully until he retired at age 70. Woody's business success was a result of his work ethic, pleasant demeanor, and emphasis on customer satisfaction. He secured all the detail work for a number of auto dealerships nearby and sold gas to several fleet accounts.

Woody was an avid golf player all his life, even in his final year of life. It was not uncommon for him to score his age, even in his 80's, be under par for the day, or score some birdies along the way. He had several flat caps as worn by many of the classic golf players, and he never left the house without donning one of them.

Woody was a Baptist "all his life" but late in life, he began attending church with his golfing friend Stan Prothero at St. Stephens United Methodist Church, where he particularly enjoyed the music ministry. Music was a big part of Woody's life growing up near Honey Grove, TX. His father, Henry Davis, was an accomplished musician who played piano, fiddle and any other stringed instrument that he encountered. Immersed in music as a child, Woody also learned to play piano and other instruments. He became a devoted music listener, spending each Saturday night watching a gospel music program on TV with Tiny.

Woody's lively personality and story-telling will be missed by his friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mildred "Tiny" Davis, for whom he was caretaker for the last 20 years of her life.

Woody is survived by his sister-in-law, Margaret Wilshire of Crestview Hills, KY; cousin Robert Tyler of Huntsville, TX; nephews Paul Wilshire of Dalhart, David Robertson of Kingsland, Brian Davis of The Woodlands, and Robert Moore III of Bellaire TX; nieces Julie Wilshire Durbin of Edgewood KY, Vicki Davis Pennington of Vernon, and Robin Davis Alsop of Choctaw, OK; and his dear friend Bill Bryant.
