Bruce Gilardi Obituary

Bruce Raymond Gilardi

Shetland, Scotland - Bruce Raymond Gilardi passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2018. Born on December 28, 1962 in California, Bruce was 55. Bruce lived the quintessential Southern California childhood in La Habra (Orange County): highlights were enjoying sand and surf at San Onofre State Beach. When Bruce was 12 the family moved to Warren, New Jersey, where he was a competitive swimmer, diver, and gymnast, an avid chef and baker, and a delivery boy for the Courier News for many years. As a teenager, Bruce worked in New York City at the original Dean & DeLuca in SoHo and at Café De La Paix in the St. Moritz. Upon graduation from Watchung Hills Regional High School (1980), Bruce attended the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University on a full Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship. Upon graduation with honors from Cornell (1985), Bruce was commissioned by his father, Captain Robert Charles Gilardi, to the United States Navy. As a contracting officer, Bruce was in charge of procurement for nuclear reactors on submarines and other ships, and he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Bruce graduated from Harvard Business School in 1995 and worked for Goldman Sachs in Zurich, Switzerland, for Kiodexx in New York City, and then established his own BRG Investment Management Ltd. At the time of his death, Bruce was living in Shetland, Scotland where he was the owner/operator of Waas Bakery. Bruce is survived by his mother Jacqueline, brothers John and James, sisters Monique and Michelle, half-sister Connie, nephews and nieces. His father preceded him in death.

We lost a fine Renaissance man in Bruce: multi-talented, multi-lingual, everything he touched became gold, so to speak. Compassionate, passionate about life, an elegant soul, he left an indelible impression on me, and many others who crossed paths with him. I met Bruce on a plane to Switzerland in '92. So handsome, smart and inspirational. You left this Earth much too soon, but what comforts me is that you were in such a idyllic place in your life. Love, Bettina

A school mate from Cornell NROTC, I extend condolences and celebrate his life of service. Brice was always upbeat, and elevated those around him. Kind and intelligent, inspirational with the humility of a gentleman.Fred Hintermister

I've just learned that heaven got this angel back. I knew Bruce when he worked with me at Goldman Sachs in Zürich. Bruce and I shared the common tie of both being Southern California natives. It was always so much fun and LIGHT in his presence. He knew how to spread joy with his smile and his humor. My heart goes out to his family and dear friends. I will remember Bruce with fondness.

Bruce was a gentleman and a gentle man. He is forever alive in our hearts, as an indispensable connector in the story of our lives. We are deeply grateful to Madeleine S for introducing us to Bruce, and that he then introduced us to Mitchell L. Mark + Guillaume

I admire all he accomplished in life and felt a strong connection due to our heritage. I don't doubt he enjoyed his every adventure along his journeys in life. I wish he could have completed his vision in Shetland. Wishing for peace for those he loved and all who loved him back. Love, Philippa
