JOHN R. MULLEN
AGE: 85
FORMERLY OF MILTON
AND SOUTH BOSTON
John R. (Bob) Mullen, 85, formerly of Milton and South Boston, died in Dennis, MA, April 4, 2009. Born Feb 16, 1924, Bob grew up in South Boston and joined the Navy at 17. For three years he served in the South Pacific on the USS Cascade and returned home to become a Boston fireman. How does one measure a successful life? Bob loved the simple pleasures: a walk around Castle Island in his beloved South Boston, his pipe and WHDH on the radio on the porch on Cape Cod, or teaching his grandson the words to "Southie is my hometown." But always his greatest pleasure was his family, as his family and legions of friends would gather for impromptu events and the chance to celebrate life together.
Loving husband and best friend of Mary B. (Geary) Mullen; devoted father of Barbara and husband Thomas Murphy of Bellingham, WA, Barry and wife, Marcia, of Lincroft, NJ, Marianne and husband, David, of Hingham, MA, Jayne and husband, Steven Sampson of East Dennis, MA, Johanne and husband, Terence Connors of Plymouth, MA; "Pop" to eight grandchildren, Michelle, Peter, Abby Mullen, Caitlin Murphy, Elizabeth, Meredith, Caroline and Andrew Kelly; favorite of Angel, Goose, Libby and Maggie. He was preceded in death by siblings, Thomas Mullen, Anne Sullivan, Martin Mullen and M. Claire Davis; survived by many nieces and nephews.
Donations in his memory to Dana Farber Cancer Institute's Belfer Cancer Genomics Center. Wake Tuesday, April 7, at Doane, Beal and Ames Funeral Home, Rt. 134, Dennis, MA, from 2 to 5pm and 6 to 9. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Cape, Brewster, Wed., April 8, at 11am.

I just read in our retirement news of Bobs passing. My husband was also Boston Fire. His first day on the job @eng.24 a Boston Globe photographer took his picture, Caption "complete contentment". He was so happy to have become a Firefighter. Bob is standing in the picture's background with a wonderful smile on his face. Because I
have that picture on my dresser and speak to it everyday, I wonder if they are fighting fires in heaven together?
I see because of the picture on this page that his smile is still magic.
my sincerest sympathies to all his family.

Dearest Johanne,
You are such a dear and true friend. My heart goes out to you and the entire wonderful Mullen family. Your father had a great sense of humor and made me laugh. I will remember to hold onto that smile and laughter. Love you.

I did not know John but having lived my whole life in Southie I just felt compelled to write. What a nice story of a man who seemed to have been so special. The memories of what he cherised hit home to this South Boston woman, especially Castle Island and teaching his grandson the words of our famous song. John seemed to have never forgot where he came from!!
May you cherish your memories and keep them close to your heart.
God Rest His Soul.

April 07, 2009. When I came to work this morning before I had checked my voicemail I was wondering how Bob,and Mary were doing. I listen to my voicemail and was so touched to hear Johanne"s Voice mail messsage. It was so touching; that you would even think to call and thank me at this time. I will be thinking of you all and am so sorry to hear that your dad passed away. You are all in my heart and in my thoughts during this difficult time. No words can soothe your hearts; it takes some time, but your father will always be with you. In the short time I had contact with you all it felt "like family". Your Mom and Dad has brought up such a caring, loving and devouted family. It was such a pleasure and honor and a "Privilege" To be able to participate in his care and coordination with you all. My deepest sympathys, Joann Nolli RN Case Manager

Barbara:
Bill Bannan advised me of the sad news your father's passing. While I certainly express my condolences to you and your family and understand that losing a parent is difficult at any time, his obituary strongly suggests he lived a wonderful life - something for you to celebrate with the rest of your family. Warm Regards, John P. Lally
