Beryl Eileen Burtis

1927 - 2018

Beryl Eileen Burtis, 90, of Yuba City, CA, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2018. Beryl was born in Sacramento on October 23, 1927. She attended Sutter High School for two years and then transferred and graduated from Yuba City High School. She started her college career at the University of California, Berkeley on a scholarship, and later transferred to Sacramento State University where she received her degree and teaching credential.

Beryl started her teaching career in a second grade class at Bridge Street Elementary School. Over her many years with Yuba City Schools she taught several different grades. She spent time as a traveling Spanish teacher, teaching at several different elementary and middle schools in a day. She went back to school for her library science credential and served as librarian at Gray Avenue Middle School followed by her last 10 years as librarian for Yuba City High School. She was a mentor and friend to many students over the years. Beryl was a founding member of the Valley Quilt Guild in 1982, and was an active member for the rest of her life. She made over a hundred quilts for foster children during her quilting career.

Beryl was married to Donald Charles Burtis on September 10, 1950, and they enjoyed over 67 years together.

Beryl is survived by her husband, Donald, of Yuba City; her three children, Eileen (Barry) Milligan of Yuba City, Kenneth (Lindy) Burtis of Woodland, CA and Colleen (Gary) Pelfrey of Live Oak, CA, and by her four grandchildren, Melissa Milligan of Edinburgh, Scotland, Michelle Milligan of Portland, OR, Mason Pelfrey of Boulder, CO and Reid Pelfrey of Live Oak, CA.
