James Setters Obituary
Dr. James Andrew Setters of Browns Valley, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, February 21, 2021, at the age of 50 after a recent diagnosis of cancer.
James was born December 28, 1970 in San Antonio, TX to Lloyd and Joyce Setters. He graduated from Lindhurst High School in 1989. He completed his undergraduate at Chico State. Completing his medical degree at Baylor Medical College in 1998. He was married to Liberty (Rice) in 1993. They enjoyed 27 years of marriage. He was a lifelong resident of the Yuba Sutter Area.
After having a serious medical issue and lengthy hospitalization as a teen he decided to become a physician. He truly understood the importance of the patient and doctor relationship. He chose private practice so he could spend quality time with his patients. He practiced medicine in the area for the last 20 years.
James was smart, witty, caring, loved learning and helping others. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved riding his motorcycles and rebuilding old cars. He is loved and will be greatly missed.
James is survived by his wife Liberty; children, Levi, Lauren and Summer; father, Lloyd Setters; stepfather Jerry Williams; siblings, Renee Brown, Shannon Oxfeld, Shelly Williams, Matt Williams and Chris Williams; grandmother, Gladys Rasmussen; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Williams.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 1:00 pm on February 27, 2021 at Crossroads Community Church in Yuba City, CA. Eddie Simmons will officiate the ceremony. Friends and family are welcome to attend and celebrate James' life.

Liberty, Bonnie and family, I am so sorry to hear about Dr. Setters. He was an amazing doctor and a friend, he would spend so much time with me answering questions about my health and talking about his life and his hobbies. I always looked forward to coming to the office because you were all like family so warm and caring. I will pray for you and hope that his memory will bring a smile instead of tears. Dr Setters was my doctor but also a friend, he was the best doctor i ever had, I always asked about his health, he just gave me the look with that little smile, We always talked about cars and motorcycles, I will miss him.

Our family was lucky enough to inherit Dr. Setters when he first began practicing in the are. We followed him when he opened his own practice and I have never met a kinder, more knowledgeable doctor in my over 60 years of doctor visits. When my husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness, he walked through the entire ordeal with us so compassionately even when he had to tell us some unwanted truths. He would spend as much time with us as we needed which you just don't see in medical practice. We were in shock and truly saddened by his passing. We know there is really nothing we can say to make anything easier but we are praying for peace for you all.

When I moved to Marysville years ago, I had the luck to find Dr. Setters online and make him my PCP, and then had the smarts to keep him as my physician (even after moving to Sacramento!) because I knew that no other Doctor I could find would be able to compare to how thorough, kind, friendly and competent Dr. Setters was. What an incredible loss to his family, this community, and to the world of medicine in general. Dr. Setters was everything you could ever hope to find in a Doctor-- someone who cared about you as a whole, not just about the symptoms at hand that brought you into his office that day. Liberty and Bonnie, my heart goes out to you both. What an extraordinary man. What an extraordinarily painful loss. I was absolutely devastated to hear this news but take comfort in knowing that I had a chance to meet this amazing man who truly made this world a better place.

Dr. Setters was the best Position I have ever had. I just found out today the 1st of March and was devastated. When it came to my appointments, he Was very thorough in his explanations and added lot’s of humor. I prey for Liberty and their children. R.I.P. Dr. Setters.

We are shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Setter’s passing. Our family has been grieving ever since we heard the news. James was a genuine, fun person to be around. He always spent a great deal of time with each of us, carefully listening to our health concerns. We really appreciated your kind and considerate office staff. I was in need of a primary physician in 2006..with the guidance of our Lord, I was led to Doctor Setters. Over the last 15 years I have grown to know Dr. Setters not just as my MD but as a close friend. He always made time for me and I truly felt I was his only patient. There were some very hard days as my health issues were complicated. Dr. Setters was brilliant, kind and funny. He loved our Lord and many appointments we discussed our common beliefs. Dr. Setters loved his family. That's quite an understatement. He spoke lovingly of his children and of his sweet wife Liberty. I know where James Setters is at this very moment and I know I will see him again.

Liberty, Summer, and family,
We were so blessed by Dr. Setters. He was a rare find and we were lucky to have been in his care. We were constantly referring him to friends and family locally and would say, "He is the only doctor in town you should see." His assessments were so thorough and he never missed anything. We loved getting to know your sweet family. Prayers and hugs. I'm sorry there are no words but please know that you are loved.
