First "ran" into Coach Greeno during his summer all-comer track and field meets in Sioux Falls during the late 60's. As our school did not have a track, we would come to practice events during the summer. He was a tremendous gift to the area track and field community and his family should be very proud of all his contributions.

I just read of Coach Greeno's passing.
My heart hurt.
Coach Greeno was my Coach, 1968-69 at
Lincoln High School. I was Sophomore.
In only that one year, before we moved away, he instilled great values in me, that 15-16 year olds need to hear and see. Honesty, Integrity, Humility, Perseverance and Self Worth. Many times in the past 48 years I have called on these values.
That is what was great about him to me, he was right with us, in the heat of the moment. Whether in practice or competition.
I have memories of a snow packed Winter country road, jogging, talking. He knew my race was the 440. He would explain that winning was great, but giving your very best, that is what you would treasure the most.
He was right.
I did not know that he was the 440 State Champion in 1946, until I read it today. He never mentioned it to me. Humility practiced.
I had for years wanted to tell him and now his family,
Thank You, thank you very much.
May Almighty God, keep him in His Memory, and comfort his family now and in the future.

It was a sad day when I learned of Coach Greeno's passing. My family was so lucky to have this kind man be our coach. We learned so much more than track and field from Coach Greeno. He taught us respect, compassion and dedication to things beyond ourselves.

My brothers, Mack and Vance Butler, and my sister Anne, and I were so fortunate to be part of a Rich Greeno team. I just hope Coach took a stop watch with him so that he can shout out the splits to Mack and Vance who are up there waiting for him.

My thoughts are with the Greeno family, especially my team mate Mark, at this time.

Thanks again, Coach.

SO many good memories came flooding back on learning of Coach Greeno's passing. He was an incredible man. I owe so much to his influence as do my brothers, Mack and Vance Butler and my sister Anne. We all got so much out of being part of a Rich Greeno team.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Greeno family as they deal with his passing. I wish I had learned of this in time - I would have done all I could to be at the service. I hope Coach Greeno has a stop watch with him so he can shout out splits to Mack and Vance.

Thanks again, Coach, for everything.

During my track and X-Country years with two great coaches Dan Lennon - USD 64-66 and Don Baker -Southern State College, Springfield 66-69; I met another great coach Rich Greeno. Many weekends Rich would visit Baker and the three of us would jog on the country roads . Years later, after Baker and Lennon passed away, coach Greeno and I met at track meets. He called me "Baker's Boy". Influenced by these three mentors I became a coach and teacher too.

What fond memories we all had of Coach Greeno workouts. Thursday's was always my biggest challenge. (15) 440's with a 220 jog..... yes a jog in between each quarter mile. He was a Stewart of making men out of us, when we were still thinking of our prom dates. He was a gentleman's gentleman. I have brought up my children to the values I learned from this gifted man. He will be happier now with his lovely wife Rosemary ,but let it be known his legacy will live on through generations. Iam honored and humbled to of been an athletic he thought worthy of teaching. We loved you Coach Greeno

I am so sorry to hear that Coach Greeno has passed away. I think of him and Ms. Rosemary quite often. I will never forger the kindness that Mr. and Mrs. Greeno showed toward my son, Christopher Duffey from Dallas when he came to Sioux Falls to attend the University of Sioux Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Greeno picked him up from the bus station and invited him to stay in their home until the dorm opened up. I will forever be grateful for their kindness. Rest in Heaven, Mr. & Mrs. Greeno.

Running for Coach Greeno was a favorite part of my 3 years at Lincoln High. He was inspirational not only in words, but also in deed as he ran with us and wasn't easy to keep up with even though he spotted me by 30 years. Almost 38 years after graduating, his influence continues in my love of running and the outdoors - Tusen Takk Coach Greeno.

Mr. Greeno was my HS Biology coach and Homeroom teacher. He was so kind and such a good teacher...and we always learned as well as had good laughs in his class. He was gifted in so many ways and its good to know he spent his life sharing his gifts with students. Thank you to the family for sharing him with so many of us over the years. He made a huge impact.

Coach Greeno put his whole being into his job, that of helping young people achieve some measure of success. I remember he was so positive, and an example of how to conduct ones self off the track as well as on. He had a knack for connecting with us kids, part of what made him phenomenal coach. So fortunate that I had him as my coach.

Rich Greeno was my coach from the fall of 1973 to the spring of 1976. I was a distance runner at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, SD. Rich Greeno is man who, in addiition to being our coach, taught all many valuable life lessons.

The one life lesson that still sticks with me to this day is Rich telling us that "the hill is your friend". This comes from training on our home cross country course included a sledding hill. He coached us to run up the hill to a tree at the top and then spint about 50 more yards after rounding the tree at the top of the hill to another tree. If an opponent wasn't beat after looking at the hill, they generally dropped out when we sprinted to that next tree.

Anytime I face something a bit tough, I think of the hill. I just get up it. It generally is not as tough as it looks. This lesson has served me well.

Sprinting another 50 yards makes the point that the difference between being good and very good is just a little bit more (the extra 50 yards).

He also taught us that we should have not regrets as long as we did our best. Win or lose you stay level headed too.

Well, I could go on and on. Thanks for touching our lives Mr. Greeno. You will be missed by many. You are in my prayers and hopefully get to take the shortcut to heaven. Take care and God Bless.

When I was a junior in high school running track for De Smet High we were competing at the Corn Palace Relays in Mitchell. After the sprint medley relay, a coach from Yankton approached me and congratulated me on my effort during the relay leg I ran. I had no clue who this man was nor ever met or seen him before. I was absolutely shocked another coach would give another team praise and congratulations after beating his team. I was speechless. Later on in my life, I finally met the man and coach who spoke to me that day in Mitchell. The Man was Rich Greeno. I am forever grateful for his kindness, support, and encouragement. Rest in peace Rich and God Bless You.

As a young, inexperienced cross country/track and field coach I liked Rich when first meeting him. He was engaging, enthusiastic, well read, and willing to share with other coaches. His legacy is truly "unmatched" in our great state for track and cross country success. His real lasting effect will be how his love for athletics transformed so many lives across our entire state. My condolences to his family for their personal loss of a father, brother, grandparent, and friend. RIP Rich Greeno the ultimate giver.

I was sad to find out about Mr. Greeno's passing this morning. He was my cross country coach and biology teacher when I was a student at Lincoln Sr. High School. He was one of those teachers you never forget because he made such a positive and caring impact on my life. I attribute part of my great love of being out in nature to him and those long runs he used to have us do! My love and prayers to his family, friends and all who knew and loved him,
